HARROGATE REVIEW

The Tomorrow’s Flooring team

at this year’s event, with their in-store concept and value-conscious carpet ranges, which were widely acclaimed by visitors to their stand (situated in Hall M) and proved a great way to move into highly visual branded carpet that stands out from the crowd.

The British company also used the Harrogate Flooring Show as an official welcome to its growing retailer network with a fantastic launch event at the prestigious Hotel Du Vin attended by myself and Tomorrow’s Flooring Editor, Karen Asbury. James Caldwell, Sales Coordinator of Crown Floors, said: “Harrogate is the first time that many retailers have been able to see the Crown Floors concept in its full glory and the response has been nothing short of fantastic. Since our launch earlier in the year we have already established a strong base of retailers and gauging from the response we have had at this year’s show, we are

expecting our coverage of the UK to become stronger and stronger over the coming months.”

Carpet Recycling UK (CRUK) CRUK welcomed more than 100 visitors to its stand in Hall C throughout the three- day show, which also attracted nearly 30 new membership enquiries. The 14 Carpet Recycling UK carpet manufacturing current members taking responsibility for end of life waste products are Abingdon, Balsan, Brintons, Brockway, Cormar, Desso, Ege, Forbo, J & J Invision, Milliken, Mohawk, Penthouse, Quadrant and Vorwerk.

Their seminar was also a big hit, with more than 50 delegates attending,

all looking for further recycling opportunities for carpets, including trials and projects involving retailers: Bradford-based Winder Carpets and the Floor Store in Leeds, presented by Dave Critchley, Technical Manager of 4Recycling, a CRUK member.

CRUK’s 2011 targets include diverting 50,000 tonnes (12%) from landfill and increasing recycling outlets to 40 across the UK, conducting further collection trials and attracting additional funding to support technical work on end market development for carpet waste.

With so much publicity and huge interest from retailers since its launch earlier in the year, it was little surprise that SmartStrand from Mohawk proved such a major hit at this year’s Harrogate Flooring Show.

The bio-based content of their carpet reduces its reliance on petrochemicals without adversely affecting its performance and, as retailers discovered at this year’s show, compared to some alternatives, SmartStrand can improve softness, durability and ease of maintenance. Howard Lindsay, vice president of Mohawk in the UK, Ireland and South Africa, said: “Our attendance at Harrogate proved to us that we have our timings spot on and that SmartStrand® has been launched to the market at exactly the right time, even with the current financial conditions. We know that the UK residential flooring industry is ready for green alternatives to carpets, particularly when they uphold such excellent value and don’t compromise durability or liveability.”
