Help at hand
The Katrin Handy Pack from Metsä Tissue eliminates health and safety issues when it comes to the manual handling of your hand towels.
According to the Health & Safety Executive website (www.hse.
gov.uk), in 2011/12 there were 141,000 new cases of musculo- skeletal disorders and 297,000 pre-existing cases. Of this total, 40% were related to the back. The highest rates were in manual and skilled occupations and 7.5 million working days were lost.
HSE say that most frequent causes of injury are manual handling, slips and trips and falls from height. They state that: “manual handling relates to the moving of items either by lifting,

lowering, carrying, pushing or pulling. But it’s not just a case of ‘pulling something’ due to the weight of the item, although this can be a cause of injury. Injuries can be caused because of the amount of times you have to pick up or carry an item, the distance you are carrying it, the height you are picking it up from or putting it down at (picking it up from the floor, putting it on a shelf above shoulder level) and any other twisting, bending, stretching or other awkward posture you may get in whilst doing a task.”
Mark Dewick.

the risk and associated cost of injury as far as possible”. He goes on: “This was one of the key drivers behind the innovative Katrin Handy Pack from Metsä Tissue.”
Lifting, turning, carrying and stacking traditional cardboard cases of hand towels, during distribution and in warehouses, is demanding work. Mark says: “As products from the warehouse of the distributor move on to the storeroom of a customer – how often is the case you require in the middle or on the bottom of the stack?”
The products then have to be distributed around the building. Multiple packs of various products taken into washroom after washroom – as well as being manoeuvred into and out of lifts, up and down stairs and piled high on trolleys. In order to perform the job quickly – how many times do people try to carry (and then drop) sleeves of products? This requires more lifting, and of course, a sleeve dropped can easily pick up germs from the floor or surrounding area.
Mark explains: “With the new Katrin Handy Pack Hand Towels, all these problems are eliminated in one go. The hand towels are delivered in convenient, light weight plastic cases with carry handles. No more ‘arms
