82 EVENT PREVIEW

PHARMA FOCUS at WORLD FORUM T

he world forum for chemical engineering and the process industry, ACHEMA, takes place from Jun 11-15 in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. New at ACHEMA 2018 is the chemical

and pharma logistics group. Pharmaceutical, packaging and storage techniques are a longstanding tradition at ACHEMA. In 2018 the event expands the exhibition group with the topics intralogistics, flow of material, tracking and tracing, temperature controlled transport, intermodal transport, and supply chain management. General topics at ACHEMA include: chemical and biochemical reaction technology; pharmaceutical technology; laboratory technology; and materials and material processing. Focal topics are identified anew for

every ACHEMA and feature topics that are currently trending in industry. Three focal topics this year are: biotech for chemistry; flexible production; and chemical and pharma logistics. Biotech for chemistry covers the subject

The area of flexible production tackles

the fact that if you want to compete in the dynamic world markets, flexibility is key – in every aspect. Smaller batches, more specialised products, faster cycles – in the end, the quality needs to be right. The digital integration of the value chain makes it possible. Finally, the focal area of chemical and

area “from gene to process to product”. It is focused on enabling chemical and biotechnological processes grow together. Biotechnology or chemistry? For the longest time this was a question of principle when it came to producing active pharmaceutical ingredients, polymers or fuel. Mineral oil is cheaper, but microbial pathways are more specific. Renewable ingredients make for a better carbon footprint but the quality isn’t as consistent as that of fossils. The times of either/or are a-changing as in the bioeconomy more and more processes now use the best of both worlds. Anything goes if it is technically feasible.

pharma logistics explores issues “from service provider to system partner with higher-level solutions”. Here, the focus is on how the digitisation of the logistics chain opens new doors in supply chain management and distribution. Stocking chemicals and pharmaceuticals and moving them from A to B is a complex task. It focuses on how flow of material is controlled within the plant is the responsibility of the company, but inbound and outbound transport is often taken care of by service providers.
