Confocal system for wider community use wins Top 10 Award

Microscopy solutions manufacturer CrestOptics SpA celebrated the recent naming of its CICERO spinning disk confocal system as a ‘Top 10 Best Microscopy Innovation’ award winner by Microscopy Today, a journal of the Microscopy Society of America, at the recent Microscopy & Microanalysis meeting held in Cleveland, Ohio (28th July – 1st August). Launched in April 2023, CICERO was developed as a compact and cost-effective solution to improve access to high-end imaging for the wider scientifi c community.

The annual Innovation Award recognises leading technological advances that its panel of expert judges predict will have the most signifi cant impact in the effi ciency and innovation of the microscopy community. Those selected are deemed to be able to provide better, faster, easier, or entirely new methods of analysis to revolutionise workfl ows using a microscope or microanalytical instrument. In 2022, the Italian company’s DeepSIM super resolution confocal microscope module was recognised with the award.

Alessandra Scarpellini, Chief Commercial Offi cer, CrestOptics, commented: “CICERO is achieving great success in the microscopy market. Our aim was to engineer a system that is unique from other solutions in the market, providing all laboratories with easy access to high-quality imaging with maximum confi guration fl exibility and we are delighted to see it recognised, not only with this award but also with growing notoriety in the fi eld.” She added: “Studying the market, we realised the need for an instrument that was at the same time powerful and easy to integrate into different platforms. This is precisely what we envision CICERO will achieve: supporting scientists as they embark on a

SMS 2024: 26th November, Glasgow

The Scottish Microscopy Society will be holding its Annual Symposium (SMS) on 26th November 2024 at Hampden Park Conference Centre in Glasgow.

This one day conference offers great opportunities for post-docs and students (and others!) to present in a friendly environment. There will be talks, posters, workshops and a trade exhibition. As well as running an imaging competition in advance of the symposium, the Society will also be presenting its annual award to the Scottish Microscopist of the Year.

This conference is open to anyone who uses or builds microscopes, across research themes.

“Our focus with CICERO has been stripping down epifl uorescence and confocal to their essential components to achieve a compact, budget-friendly yet performing and powerful system,” said Federico Filesi, Electronics Engineers & Project Manager for CICERO project.

He continued: “My wish is to see our customers make good use of our engineering and design features and to ease their daily work with the smoothest confocal experience.”

SEMT meeting: 4th December, London

The next meeting of the Society of Electron Microscopy Technology (SEMT) will be held on 4th December 2024 at the Natural History Museum.

Affi liated to the Royal Microscopical Society, SEMT is a forum for ideas on techniques and applications in microscopy. It has become one of the foremost user groups in the country, addressing all aspects of microscopy from instrument design and specimen preparation to digital image acquisition.

The Society will this year be hosting the RMS beginners competition which is specifi cally aimed at students, interns, apprentices and faculty staff who may have given no more than two talks outside their home institution. We welcome talks on topics with a microscopy focus and using any form of microscopy.

The presentation slot is relatively short, encouraging an economical style and well-thought out talk and is a highlight of the meeting. Participants are allocated a 10-minute slot, to include a recommended 7 minute talk and 3 minutes for questions.

Students interested in entering should contact the Society by email.

The Society is planning for an in-person meeting and will be streaming the meeting live for people who wish to attend virtually, for whom registration fees will also apply to help meet the cost of the event. Details of how the meeting will be streamed will be sent to registrants on the 12th December. Further details of the meeting will be available shortly.
