28 Sustainable temperature control systems with CO2 refrigerant
Peter Huber Kältemaschinenbau SE has unveiled its next-generation Unistat temperature control systems, integrating cutting-edge technologies to deliver enhanced efficiency and sustainability. The updated Unistats now come with a 4-year warranty and offer ‘Green Line’ models utilising CO2
refrigerant (R-744). These environmentally-
friendly units feature zero Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP = 0), minimal Global Warming Potential (GWP = 1), and non-flammability, providing a 100% sustainable alternative to systems using synthetic refrigerants. Covering applications from laboratory research to industrial production, Huber’s range of natural refrigerant solutions is unparalleled in liquid temperature control.
The new Unistats feature a reduced internal filling volume, significantly decreasing heating and cooling times. This enhancement improves ‘time-to-temperature’ and overall response times, allowing for more efficient processing. The systems are now equipped with state-of-the-art, magnetically coupled circulation pumps that deliver high flow rates for optimal heat transfer. Enhanced venting and degassing functions ensure quick commissioning and smooth, uninterrupted operation.
Safety and connectivity have also seen major upgrades. All safety features meet or exceed performance level C standards (DIN EN ISO 13849-1). The new ‘Com.G@te DIGITAL’ module is included as standard, offering common digital interfaces and improved temperature measurement accuracy. Connectivity options can be expanded with additional modules and gateways, including the optional ‘Com.G@te PLUS’ for analogue interfaces.
Huber’s hydraulically sealed Unistats support wide temperature ranges without the need for fluid changes. They prevent oil vapours and oxidation of heat transfer fluids (HTF), extending the lifespan of the HTF. The systems are designed with sustainable energy management in mind, featuring low power and water consumption that translates to reduced operating costs. A compact housing design minimises the footprint, making these units ideal for space-constrained laboratories and production facilities.
Since early 2024, all Huber temperature control units, including the new Unistats, come with an extended 4-year warranty. To activate the warranty, customers simply need to register the unit’s serial number within three months of delivery.
Unistat process circulators offer cooling capacities from 0.48 to 130 kW, making them perfect for demanding thermal process engineering tasks. Their versatility ensures smooth scale-up from research laboratories to full-scale production environments.

ilmt.co/PL/eoJE Fast, accurate solution for herb and spice authentication
A newly launched food authentication technology is set to revolutionise the testing of herbs and spices, reducing the time needed for sample analysis from days to mere minutes. Developed by Belfast-based Bia Analytical in collaboration with Storm Reply, a cloud engineering company, the web-based portal offers a fast, accessible solution for verifying the authenticity of herbs and spices across the food supply chain.
Previously, food fraud testing was a lengthy process, often taking up to two weeks and limited to small sample sizes due to cost constraints. With this new platform, food testing laboratories, manufacturers, and retailers can now perform rapid, accurate analysis using Bia Analytical’s advanced scientific models. The portal integrates AI-powered modelling, chemometrics, and spectroscopy, instantly identifying authenticity and presenting results in easy-to-understand dashboards. Accessible via standard web browsers, it allows professionals across different locations to view the same data in real time.
The system also connects to handheld spectrometers, a portable service Bia Analytical introduced in 2024. This enables users to quickly screen herbs and spices, enhancing quality control and audit processes for government bodies, food manufacturers, and retailers. The cloud-based solution, built using Amazon Web Services (AWS), offers both speed and scalability, encouraging higher frequency and volume of testing.
According to Rachel Grunwerg from Storm Reply: “Food analysis is an industry in need of modernisation. It’s been rewarding working with Bia Analytical to digitise the testing process, providing significant benefits to the supply chain and consumers.”
Fraud in food supply chains, particularly in herbs and spices, is a growing issue. A 2021 EU study revealed that more than half of spice products tested contained undeclared plant materials, with oregano being the most affected. The new technology is also versatile, capable of being applied to a wide range of commodities like meat, fish, soybeans, cocoa, and coffee.
Bia Analytical’s CEO, Simon Cole, emphasised that faster, more frequent testing is essential for improving food safety and tackling the growing food fraud crisis. The platform is already in use for herb and spice testing and will soon be available for broader applications.

ilmt.co/PL/W9eM Liquid waste autoclave simplifies biohazard disposal
The workflow process for facilities sterilising large volumes of liquid waste has been significantly simplified. Staff no longer need to manually load containers of liquid waste into autoclaves or chemically treat wastewater with disinfectants before disposal, thanks to the introduction of the AstellBio Liquid Waste Autoclave 200.
Disposing of biologically contaminated liquid waste can be a time-consuming process for those relying on chemical sterilisation. Not only is the sterilisation process itself lengthy, but it also demands extensive staff training to ensure compliance with proper protocols and safety procedures. Regular retraining is required to maintain proficiency and implement new practices effectively.
With the AstellBio Liquid Waste Autoclave 200, facilities can reduce the burden on staff. Named for the number of litres it can sterilise per hour, the Liquid Waste Autoclave 200 handles the entire process automatically. Once connected to sinks, sluices, and other wastewater-producing devices, the system collects, sterilises, and disposes of liquid waste without requiring human interaction. Using the same thermal sterilisation process as a traditional autoclave, it guarantees complete sterilisation of liquid waste.
Moreover, because the Liquid Waste Autoclave 200 relies solely on heat for sterilisation, it eliminates the risk of soil or groundwater contamination.
From pathogens and biohazards associated with Containment Levels 1 to 3 / Bio Safety Levels 1 to 3, to genetically modified organisms, toxins, liquid animal waste, or combinations thereof, the AstellBio Liquid Waste Autoclave 200 is capable of sterilising a diverse range of liquid waste. It does all this within a compact 1.5m² footprint, making it an efficient solution for one or multiple laboratories. More information online:
