13 Sample Preparation & Processing High-performance centrifuges with sustainable cooling
Thermo Fisher Scientifi c has introduced its most sustainable large-capacity and superspeed centrifuges to date, designed to support reliable sample preparation while reducing environmental impact. The new Thermo Scientifi c™ Cryofuge™, BIOS, and LYNX centrifuge lines feature GreenCool™ Technology – a next-generation natural refrigerant system with a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of just 1, complying with EU and US EPA F-gas regulations.
These centrifuges offer up to 15% energy savings compared to previous models and are manufactured at Thermo Fisher’s zero-waste site in Osterode am Harz, Germany, which runs entirely on renewable energy.
With lighter, quieter builds and advanced temperature control, the new centrifuges provide high-performance, energy-effi cient sample processing for blood banking, bioprocessing, and life science research. Users can expect precise, reproducible separations with improved ergonomics and intuitive interfaces, all while supporting greener lab operations.
The Cryofuge 8 and 16 models are tailored for blood banking, combining strong sample security with improved sustainability. BIOS centrifuges deliver high-throughput performance for large-volume bioprocessing applications, while LYNX 4000 and 6000 superspeed models ensure reliable results for temperature-sensitive samples in complex research workfl ows.
“As the leader in large-capacity and superspeed centrifugation, we’re proud to offer sustainable solutions without compromising quality or reliability,” said Thomas Doerdelmann, VP and GM at Thermo Fisher Scientifi c.
These models replace the previous Sorvall line and represent a shift toward environmentally conscious sample processing across labs and production facilities.

Benchtop Nutsche fi lter-dryers
Delivering reproducible solutions for chromatography sample preparation
Sample preparation is a critical step for chromatography to ensure samples are optimised for analysis. This step involves various techniques such as, solid phase extraction (SPE), phospholipid removal (PLR) or protein precipitation. Without proper sample preparation, chromatographic performance can be compromised, leading to inaccurate and irreproducible data.
Porvair Sciences’ comprehensive range of products for sample preparation includes a wide selection of consumables, such as the Microlute® range, sample collection plates, and vials. Additionally, the company provides instruments such as the Ultravap® evaporators, vacuum manifold and UltraPPM LITE positive pressure manifold to ensure optimal sample preparation.
The sample preparation product range includes: Microlute® CSi for silica solid phase extraction (SPE); Microlute® PLR for phospholipid removal; Microlute® PPP for protein precipitation; Microlute® SLE for supported liquid extraction; Ultraseal™ range of adhesive and heat sealers for sample protection and storage; Ultravap® range of blowdown evaporators for sample concentration; UltraPPM LITE for positive pressure processing;Deep well microplates for sample collection, handling and storage.
Like high purity production systems, these compact units perform highly effi cient pressurised fi ltration, plus solids washing, reslurrying, and heated vacuum drying with agitation, all in a single, sealed 316L stainless steel vessel. Handling, contamination, and safety risks are greatly reduced in pharma, specialty and fi ne chemicals and many other industries.
The Pope standard Benchtop Series units are stocked and available in 1, 3, 4, and 5-L sizes, are CE/PED and ASME pressure certifi ed and come complete with sightglasses, valves, pressure/ vacuum gauges, pressure reliefs crystal washing sprayheads, and choices of fi lter screen pore sizes. Raising/lowering fi lter cake agitators and options for heating and vacuum are offered.
Beyond standard Benchtop models, Pope also stocks standard 25, 50, and 100-L nutsche sizes. These standard and stocked units are all available with short delivery times. In addition to stocked systems, custom nutsche filter- dryers are offered in many sizes, fabrication materials, designs, and feature sets, including isolation, containment, and harvesting types, and advanced controls.
Whether off-the-shelf or fully custom tailored, Pope’s Nutsche systems give researchers and processing personnel the tools to streamline workfl ow and optimise results with reliable, scalable performance.
