Laboratory Products 37 Routine Scale-up of Photochemistry Reactions

The Uniqsis PhotoSyn™ is a high-power light source module for continuous flow chemistry systems proven to enable synthetic chemists to routinely scale-up their photochemistry reactions from milligrams to several kilograms per day.

The PhotoSyn™ is designed to provide scientists with a high-power LED light source for continuous flow applications. Using a pair of enclosed curved cooled LED arrays, the PhotoSyn™ efficiently focuses light inwards onto a central coil reactor. Each array is composed of 360 individual LEDs that provide a high photon intensity to facilitate reactions in coil reactors (up to 52 ml) and enabling easy reaction scale-up.

The unit is available with different standard LED configurations including 365nm and 455nm as well as a 3-colour option of green, white, and blue. Custom excitation wavelength versions of the PhotoSyn™ are also available on request. Offering the versatility to be optimised to suit your photochemical application, the PhotoSyn™ is designed to integrate with the Uniqsis Cold Coil™ and the Polar Bear Plus Flow™ reactor modules.

To maximise safety, PhotoSyn™ has been designed to operate without any light leakage, and therefore does not require a tinted or light-tight enclosure. Safety interlocks are also fitted to prevent the possibility of accidental exposure to high intensity LED light should an attempt be made to remove the PhotoSyn™ from the reactor module whilst in operation.

New Software Empowers Scientists in Life Science Laboratories

TotalLab, a global leader in image analysis software for life science, has advanced its 1D gel electrophoresis and blot image analysis software offering with the launch of Phoretix 1D.

Building on TotalLab’s decades of experience responding to the needs of customers, Phoretix 1D has been designed from the ground up to be quick to learn with an easy-to-navigate workflow. It benefits from user-customisable automation which enables fast, accurate and reproducible results when analysing 1D gels and blots.

Built using completely redesigned code, the software’s intuitive algorithms enable greater standardisation in established workflows and gives users full control over their desired level of automation.

Phoretix 1D’s industry-leading background removal algorithms automatically remove background ‘noise’ to ensure more accurate band intensity measurements. This increased accuracy feeds through into improved molecular weight calculation, quantity calibration and normalisation.

Alongside these algorithms, its user-defined protocols enable complete one-click analysis of images. This feature alone completely removes the risk of inter-operator error whilst simultaneously increasing productivity and confidence in your analysis. It’s also possible to share user-defined protocols between different users and facilities thus standardising lab workflows around the world.

Dr Steven Dodd, Head of Sales and Business Development commented: “We have been listening to the evolving needs of the market and are delighted to release our streamlined software for the comprehensive analysis of 1D gels and blots. We’ve also identified the growing number of Mac users in the life sciences and made this 1D software compatible with the latest M1 Macs.

“Using the latest advances in technology, our product developments will support our customers to optimise workflows and improve the reproducibility and reliability of their results, whilst adhering to 21 CFR Part 11 regulations where necessary.”

TotalLab’s expanding portfolio includes 1D gel and blot software Phoretix 1D, image matching software CLIQS 1D Pro, as well as 2D image statistics software SameSpots and 2D-PAGE HCP coverage software SpotMap.

ADVERTORIAL WalkLAB pH meter HP9010 and Conductivity

meter HC9021 from Trans Instruments Trans Instruments (TTBH Pte Ltd), a specialist manufacturer of pH and conductivity instrumentation for over 30 years, announces the WalkLAB HP9010 pH meter and HC9021 Conductivity meter.

Designed with accuracies matching that of benchtop meters, yet fully portable for onsite use, these meters have a large and simple to navigate backlit LCD display in a rugged ABS casing, which is fully splash and weather proof and has an IP rating of 65. It is simple to use with each measurement automated with an auto-lock system that will display a stabilised endpoint reading. This unique feature allows users, even inexperienced ones, to make calibration and take measurements with minimum handling, temperature or sensor stability errors. Calibration data are stored in non-volatile memory, where in the event of battery removal, data is not erased. It can to store up to 99 sets of measured data memory for pH, mV and temperature stamped with date and time. Users can download stored memory or make continuous data logging on a PC with the optional USB connection kit that comes with an interface software.

The HP9010 pH meter is capable of 5 point calibrations with automatic buffer recognition. Two groups of standards can be selected from ISO standard pH7.00, 4.01 and 10.01 or NIST standard of 6.86, 9.18 etc. Users are able to review the calibration offset and percentage of slope of the electrode. The meter can be attached with an ORP electrode to make redox measurement in millivolts.

The HC9021 conductivity meter is able to make 5 point calibrations over the full range and measured readings are automatically switched to the calibrated range at each of the calibrated point. This greatly enhances the accuracy of the measurement over the entire range. The meter can display units in ppm and conversion factors are adjustable if required. Salinity measurement can be made by switching the display mode to display in ppt, where a separate calibration can be made in NaCl calibration standards.

Both meters are made where ease of use, repeatability and robustness are fundamentals to educational, industrial, textile, aquaculture, commercial and professional users.
