29 Drug Discovery, Pharmaceuticals & Cannabis Testing Certifi ed Reference Materials for Cannabis Quality Testing
As the demand for cannabis and its extracts continue to grow, cannabis quality testing is becoming more important than ever to ensure products meet the safety criteria for human consumption for both recreational and medicinal uses. Cannabis is generally tested for potency (cannabinoids content) and terpene profiling and for contaminants such as residual solvents, pesticides, and heavy metals. With the lack of federal involvement, States and different agencies such as ASTM, have begun publishing their own test methods to offer guidance to growers and producers to ensure the safety of consumers.
AccuStandard offers reference standards for cannabis testing that are designed to meet the requirements of different States or international test methods such as California, Colorado, Florida, Maryland, Nevada and Canada. AccuStandard’s Cannabis Testing products also include CRMs that’s designed for specific
ASTM methods such as D8399, Standard Test Method of Pesticides in Dried Cannabis. AccuStandard’s technical team is available to custom formulate a CRMs that meet the requirements of your specific test.

Using a Specialist Detector for Nitrosamine Analysis in Pharmaceutical Drugs
Over the past few years, the news has seen many high-profile recalls of various pharmaceutical drugs that have been found to contain nitrosamines. Nitrosamines are carcinogenic compounds, so they must be monitored to ensure unsafe levels are not found in consumer products. Governments worldwide are now requiring reporting on Nitrosamine Levels, with manufacturers often finding the analysis anything but simple, with common issues including achieving the required detection limits and false positives.
The Ellutia 800 Series TEA is the ideal detector for nitrosamine analysis thanks to its selectivity and sensitivity for Nitroso compounds. The TEA is a chemiluminescence detector that can be interfaced with a GC, HPLC, or total nitrosamine analysis system. The TEA uses a pyrolyser in GC
operation to cleave the NO group from compounds as they elute from the GC column. This NO group is then reacted with ozone which produces a photon of light which is detected.
The 800 Series TEA can be interfaced with a chemical stripping system for testing pharmaceutical drugs, allowing for rapid testing of ATNC (Apparent Total N-nitrosamine content). This uses a chemical reaction to remove the NO group rather than a pyrolyser. This technique quickly gives an accurate result for the total nitrosamine content of a sample showing both volatile and non-volatile components in a single result.
Any positive sample can be further analysed by an 800 Series TEA interfaced to a GC where volatile nitrosamines such as NDMA (N-Nitrosodimethylamine) can be separated and quantified.

Porvair Sciences has developed a 2 ml 96-well microplate whose design is optimised for labs processing cannabis samples for analysis of Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and Cannabidiol (CBD).
Sample processing is the second step in testing cannabis strains. This is carried out after collecting leaf, bud, and flower samples from cannabis plants, ready for accurate determination of the THC/CBD ratio by HPLC.
Traditionally sample processing protocols have used bead-beating or grinding mills to homogenise the plant materials. When this sample processing is carried out in standard polypropylene microplates, the extreme forces applied by these machines can cause damage to the plates, leading to cracking, leaking, and incorrect results due to sample cross-contamination.
To address these design shortfalls, Porvair Sciences developed a reinforced microplate that could withstand the applied forces in bead beaters while maintaining a standard ANSI/SLAS footprint making the methodology automation compatible.
Based upon a 2 ml square well block design, Porvair Sciences cannabis sample processing microplate sets a new standard for reliable, high productivity cannabis plant processing. To ensure that no contamination from the plate will affect the THC/CBD analysis, Porvair Sciences only uses pure, extractables free polypropylene, to manufacture its plates.
