36 New Gel IIluminator Offers Alternative to UV and LED-based Light
The next-generation Gel-Bright™ Laser Diode Gel Illuminator from Biotium was developed in partnership with light and optics instrumentation company OMEC Medical. Designed to offer a better alternative to UV and LED-based gel imaging, the Gel-Bright™ Laser Diode Gel Illuminator features a novel laser diode-based illumination technology that offers exceptional performance for a wide selection of fluorescent dyes, and does not require laser safety glasses.
In close partnership with Biotium scientists, OMEC Medical developed the new Gel-Bright™ to offer sensitive gel imaging for both green and red dyes without relying on hazardous UV light. The incorporation of laser diodes enables stronger and more focused illumination, allowing brighter and more efficient excitation for a wide range of fluorescent dyes. As a result, the Gel-Bright™ Laser Diode Gel Illuminator offers better sensitivity over UV-based transilluminators when imaging green dyes such as GelGreen®
or SYBR® Green/SYBR® Safe, as well as significantly better performance over blue LED gel illuminators for red dyes such as GelRed® , ethidium bromide
(EtBr), and One-Step Lumitein™ Protein Gel Stain. The Gel-Bright™ Laser Diode Gel Illuminator contains 12 laser diodes that are positioned at an optimal angle for consistent and uniform illumination of the gel. Safety
glasses are not required because the amount of laser light that could enter the eye’s pupil is below the CDRH limits. In addition, an adjustable multi-hinged amber filter provides optimal signal-to-noise and can be moved into a lower position for gel imaging, or a higher position for easy access when excising bands. With convenience in mind, the gel illuminator also has a compact and portable design for easy transport and minimising occupied space on benchtops.
Each purchase of a Gel-Bright™ Laser Diode Gel Illuminator will include a free sample of GelRed®
remove the extra step of adding dye to your agarose. More information online:

Extended Warranty on Scales from 2023
Leading UK weighing scale and balance manufacturer Adam Equipment is extending the warranty periods of its products to as much as five years in a move to demonstrate the quality and durability of its products.
Effective from January 2023, Adam’s new warranties will apply to all new purchases from that point. “Extending many products to a five-year warranty will put the Adam brand ahead of just about any other scale or balance manufacturer you can think of.” said CEO Richard Storey.
Richard continued: “Our previous warranty structure, whilst in line with much of the weighing industry, didn’t reflect the confidence we have in the quality and durability of Adam products. “So, we did some research. We’ve spoken to customers, some who have had an Adam scale or balance for 10, 15 years or more and it’s still going strong. “We know Adam products will outlast the average scale or balance - so we don’t think they should have an average scale or balance warranty.
“Warranty gives you peace of mind, peace of mind that we will stand by the investment you make and that the quality and durability of our products’ performance allows you to weigh better for longer.”
To take advantage of the new, longer warranty periods, buyers only need to register their product on Adam’s website upon purchase. Should they experience any issues with parts or workmanship, the buyer would contact either their local Adam office or the authorised reseller who they bought the product from by telephone or email to start the streamlined claim process.
“We’ve been in this industry for 50 years and our customers know that the Adam brand means quality,” said Richard. “We’re excited that our new warranties promise new customers that they can trust Adam for their weighing needs - with double the peace of mind compared to our old warranty periods in many cases.” Adam Equipment, which celebrated its 50th birthday in 2022, is making the new warranty periods available worldwide, via its offices in the UK, Germany, USA, South Africa, Australia and China. Titan Enterprises offers a range of high-performance flowmeters in food grade materials where both food hygiene and precision flow measurement are required.
“The physical properties of the liquids themselves lend additional complexities to the choice of flow measuring equipment,” says Neil Hannay, Senior Development Engineer at Titan Enterprises. “Consideration of whether the liquid is viscous, volatile, corrosive, flammable, or contaminated with particles, for example, or needs to be maintained at a high temperature, are key factors in deciding a suitable flow meter.”
Flow monitoring of high viscosity liquids, such as cooking oils, sauces and syrups (e.g. syrup injections in beverage lines) require devices such as Titan’s oval gear flowmeters, which provide highly accurate flow measurement. Unlike other flowmeters, measurement accuracy of oval gear flowmeters improves as the liquid viscosity increases, from a nominal 1% to around 0.1% of flow rate at higher viscosities.
Whereas for low viscosity liquids such as water, beer, wine and spirits, Titan’s NSF-approved 800-series and beverage flowmeters provide a low-cost drink dispensing solution. Designed to give high performance over 6 flow ranges from 0.05 to 15 l/min, these devices have totally non-metallic NSF-
approved wetted components making them ideally suited for applications where both food hygiene and precision flow measurement are required.
In processes where ingredients need to be maintained at high temperatures – chocolate for example – a flowmeter designed for applications requiring precise flow measurement at elevated temperatures would be needed. Capable of operating up to 110°C, Titan’s inline non-invasive Atrato®
ultrasonic flowmeter is largely immune from viscosity and offers excellent turndown and repeatability.
Titan Enterprises offers a range of oval gear flowmeters in food grade materials for viscous products such as sauces, oils and syrups, as well as NSF-approved mini-turbine flowmeters for drink dispensing. As an experienced OEM supplier, Titan develop customised flow meters for specific customer applications within the food and beverage industry.
