EMS Announces Recipients of 2020 JEOL-EM Awards

The Life Sciences award goes to Dr Emmanuel Beaurepaire, Laboratory for optics and biosciences CNRS-INSERM-Polytechnique, Palaiseau, France.

The European Microscopy Society is pleased to announce the names of this year’s JEOL-EM Award winners.

The Physical/Materials Sciences and Optics award, goes to Dr Sara Bals, EMAT-University of Antwerp, Belgium

Awarded for her outstanding achievements in the fi eld of 3D electron tomography. By combining state-of-the-art electron microscopy with advanced reconstruction algorithms, Sara Bals has signifi cantly contributed to development and implementation of this method which today enables determination of the positions and chemical nature of atoms in individual nanoparticles. The research of Sara Bals is highly innovative and widely recognized by the EM scientifi c community.

Awarded for his outstanding achievements in the fi elds of developmental biology and neurobiology by development of novel, cutting-edge light microscopy techniques. Notably, he pushed forward methods of deep-tissue imaging, with important application potential for insights into developing small model systems and for brain imaging, using advanced techniques such as multicolor two- photon excitation, third-harmonic generation imaging, adaptive optics, pulse shaping, etc.

Congratulations to both winners!

Winners will present their talks at the virtual European Microscopy Society General Assembly in August. Details will be released by the EMS in the coming weeks.

The Crick: BioImaging Symposium - October 20

The Crick BioImage Analysis Symposium (CBIAS) aims to showcase image analysis techniques to biomedical researchers and to demonstrate how such approaches can help them advance their research.

The symposium will bring together life scientists and leading developers of bioimage analysis methods to illustrate how such approaches can answer defi ned biological questions.

The Francis Crick Institute is still hoping to host this symposium, but registration is not yet open. If you have any questions in the meantime, please get in touch with the symposium organisers.

XVIIth International Conference on Electron Microscopy

29th November - 2nd December 2020. Venue: Wisła, Poland, EU

The organisers current global pandemic situation caused by the outbreak of COVID-19 is causing a great amount of uncertainty in general, but to scientifi c community in particular. We would like to inform you that the planning of the 17th International Conference on Electron Microscopy 2020 in Wisła is continuing. The Organising Committee decided to postpone the event, and the Conference will be scheduled for 29th November - 2nd December 2020.

The Conference will provide a platform for electron microscopists, crystallographers, materials scientists, and solid state physicists to discuss methods and techniques used in electron microscopy. The scope of the EM’2020 is to provide a broad overview of the recent achievements in electron microscopy in the three major areas of instruments, methods, and application. The conference program will include plenary lectures, oral and poster presentations covering both

the fundamental, theory, instrumentations and applied research.

To allow maximum planning fl exibility the deadlines were also changed. The new deadlines are given below: Abstract Submission Deadline: 15th July 2020 Notifi cation Due: 30th July 2020 Registration Deadline: 15th July 2020 Hotel Reservation Deadline: 15th October 2020

If you already have made the reservation at the Hotel Stok, we would like to notify you that all the reservations were rebooked to a new date. The Organising Committee is doing everything possible to make the Conference take place in accordance with the new schedule.

The ability to routinely acquire large, multi-dimensional datasets with modern microscopy techniques is revolutionising biomedical research. In order to fully realise the benefi ts of such imaging technologies, automated analysis pipelines are needed, but many life scientists lack the necessary expertise to design and execute such analyses.

The key objectives of the symposium are:

• Inform biomedical researchers of the possibilities that image analysis can deliver for their research

• Establish links between life science researchers and image analysis experts

• Foster the development of an image analysis network, with the Crick as its central hub

Confi rmed speakers: Peter Horvath, Hungarian Academy of Sciences Susan Cox, Kings College London Eva Frickel, University of Birmingham Jean-Yves Tinevez, Institut Pasteur Pete Bankhead, University of Edinburgh

RMS AFM & SPM Meeting 2020

3rd - 4th November 2020 - Sheffi eld Scientifi c Organiser: Jamie Hobbs

UK AFM & SPM 2020 represents an exciting opportunity to explore the latest developments in atomic force microscopies and scanning probe microscopies.

The AFM & SPM Meeting is held annually and provides an excellent forum for the community to meet and discuss the latest advances in the fi eld. With an exhibition alongside organised social activities, it is one of the best events in 2020 for atomic force microscopy and scanning probe microscopy users, for PhD students and well- seasoned microscopists alike.

This event was rescheduled from June 2020. Further information will be available soon.

Flow Cytometry Course 2020

14th - 18th September 2020 - York

Scientifi c Organisers: Peter O’Toole, Derek Davies, Steve Couzens and Karen Hogg

This Flow Cytometry Course is aimed at both life science and clinical science fi elds, with the common fundamentals covered on Day 1 and 2. The course then splits into life science and clinical orientated modules, from practical demonstrations to lectures highlighting not just the applications, but best practise as well.

The course is constructed as a set of three modules. You can elect to attend the course from between two to fi ve days, depending on the modules selected.

The modules consist of lectures interspersed with sessions in the laboratory. It is anticipated that instruments from three manufacturers will be available for practical work.
