Laboratory Products 25 New Advanced Pipetting Academy Makes You a Pipetting Master

For many years Alpha Laboratories and Sartorius have delivered a popular training programme covering correct pipetting techniques, the ergonomic use of pipettes, plus basic service and maintenance of pipettes in everyday laboratory use. User feedback has now led to the development of the Advanced Pipetting Academy™ to address the unique requirements of individual laboratories.

The new Advanced Pipetting Academy™ is an ISO9001 and ISO 13485 accredited training programme that brings together the expertise and experiences of technical specialists, third party consultants and end-users. The extended modules cover Advanced Pipetting Techniques, Pipette Service, Advanced Ergonomics and Cell Culture Techniques. Each module can be taken individually or combined to create a learning experience best suited to your laboratory. The application based training includes participation in hands-on sessions. On-going support is provided through access to an on-line support site with a wide range of educational videos and presentations.

A pipette’s performance is heavily dependent on the skill and expertise of the operator so incorrect handling can compromise the quality of results and cause repetitive strain injuries. With the Advanced Pipetting Academy, users will get practical training on pipetting techniques to help them achieve more accurate and precise results. They will gain a better understanding of the ergonomic risks of pipetting in the laboratory environment and learn how to minimise these risks by choosing appropriate working postures, liquid handling instruments and accessories.

New In-situ Hydrolysis SPE Plates Announced

KNFlab_Teaser_UK_(LABOR&MORE)_Mar_14 06/03/2014 11:21 Page 1

Rotary Evaporation as an Efficient, Economic System

KNF offer rotary evaporators, vacuum supply and chillers which are perfectly attuned to one another. Having a single point of contact for the entire system saves time and costs.

Biotage, a leading global supplier of solutions and technology for analytical, medicinal and peptide chemistry, is pleased to announce the launch of EVOLUTE® HYDRO, solid phase extraction plates with an integral Hydrolysis capability that enable chemists to perform sample hydrolysis within the extraction plate; saving time and reducing sample transfer issues.

EVOLUTE® HYDRO Solid Phase Extraction

plates gives customers the ability to perform sample (typically urine) hydrolysis within the wells of the extraction plate, followed directly by sample clean up using solid phase extraction, without the need for sample transfer. The Hydro frit technology used by the plates reliably ‘holds up’ both sample and enzyme during incubation at elevated temperatures. This reduces clogging during subsequent clean up steps, leading to robust and streamlined sample preparation. Sample clean-up is performed in the same plate, without the need to transfer samples, saving time and reducing risky sample handling steps.

The plates are packed with high quality 30 µm EVOLUTE®

HYDRO can be media, with CX (mixed

mode strong cation exchange) and ABN (wettable/non-polar) phases available at launch. EVOLUTE®

processed using 96-well compatible positive pressure manifolds (e.g. Biotage®

Pressure+

96), vacuum manifolds (e.g. Biotage® VacMaster™ 96) and automated liquid handling systems (e.g. Biotage®

Extrahera™).

“By combining our unique Hydro frit technology with our wettable EVOLUTE® sorbents, the new SPE plates allow the hydrolysed sample to be loaded directly onto the SPE bed for clean-up. The conditioning and equilibration steps are eliminated, saving time and reducing costs,” said Dr Claire Desbrow, Global Product Manager, Analytical Chemistry, Biotage.

The RC 900 rotary evaporator fulfils one of the crucial requirements for laboratory devices: it saves space! The virtually silent lift and rotation

of the RC 900 makes for pleasant day-to-day working conditions. Equally advantageous are the design details, which enable routine tasks such as changing flasks to be performed quickly. The memory function saves the current immersion depth and rotation speed, allowing the flasks to be exchanged quickly, easily and reliably during a repeating process.

The SC 920 G vacuum pump system can be controlled remotely, and automatically detects and monitors the boiling point.

By combining the RC900 together with the SC 920 G vacuum pump system and the C 900 chiller provides an efficient and economic system package – perfectly coordinated and from a single source.

Rotary evaporation as a system solution to suit different budgets

The RC 600 rotary evaporator is also available as part of different system packages to suit every budget and can be combined with the N920 G and VC 900 to provide precise vacuum control.

The N 920 G vacuum pump boasts a high suction speed, especially in the low vacuum range and can be speed controlled via the VC 900 to maintain efficiency.

VC 900 for easy vacuum supply control

With the VC 900, KNF has introduced an easy-to- use vacuum control unit that reliably and securely regulates the vacuum application. The VC 900 can be used to precisely control KNF vacuum pumps as well as pumps from other manufacturers. The vacuum control unit consists of two parts. The control unit, featuring pressure sensor technology and a two-step controlled valve, can be set up separately from the operating unit with this compact design and touch screen, thereby taking full

advantage of even the tightest of working spaces. The KNF vacuum control unit is suitable for use as an individual workstation solution, as the central vacuum supply, as well as in combination with rotary evaporators.
