Rapid, precise and reliable safety monitoring for ATEX Zone 20 in potentially explosive dust atmospheres Enotec’s SILOTEC®
8000 performs quick, effi cient and precise
analysis of oxygen, carbon monoxide and methane for ATEX zone 20 in silos and other dusty atmospheres with a high risk of explosion.
The simultaneous measurement of O2 and COe enables
smouldering fi res to be detected potentially saving human life as well as property. The SILOTEC 8000 is completely maintenance free and has the requisite IP rating for uncomplicated installation on silo roofs. Quick in situ measurements eliminate the need for a slow, high- maintenance extractive analyser system.

82nd Gas Analysis and Sensing Group (GASG) Colloquium
Rising Stars in Gas Sensing: 4th Early Career Researchers Meeting 10th March 2022 Online
Our spring 2022 colloquium will provide an opportunity for Early Career Researchers to give short talks (5-10 minutes, to be decided) or posters in the areas of gas analysis / volatile compound analysis and sensing technologies for gases, VOCs and particulate matter. Contributions cover a broad spectrum with presenters from industry, academia, government, etc. As usual, a plenary lecture will be given by an invited guest. This is an excellent
opportunity to hear about the latest research in this important and topical area.
Once again we will be awarding prizes - £100 for the best talk and £100 for the best poster. In addition, the winners will be eligible for free attendance at the next GASG meeting.
The Early Career symposium will be a one day online meeting (Teams), starting at 10:30 GMT with talks commencing at 11.00 GMT. There will be ample opportunities for networking over the lunch break and talks will fi nish at 15:30 GMT, followed by the presentation of prizes.
Attendees will be able to view posters at specifi c times and discuss them with the presenters in breakout rooms. It is anticipated that there will be opportunities to have informal discussions regarding employment prospects in the gas detection and analysis area with companies and research groups active in the fi eld - recruitment breakout rooms will be provided for this purpose.
Please contact Sam on
admin@gasg.info for further information and see details below for meeting fees and deadlines.

Welcome to the fi rst STA focus column of 2022. We fi nished 2021 with a fl urry of meetings, and since moving online our meetings, which were already very well attended when held at our offi ces, have grown from strength to strength with a record attendance at the general meeting held on 11th November. As usual we had representation from all sectors of our industry, stack testing organisations, process operators, equipment suppliers, regulators, accreditation and certifi cation bodies. The meeting was split into four sections, health and safety, quality and technical, process operators and equipment suppliers. Where we discussed topics such as Site work – COVID-19 risk assessment and members’ feedback, accidents, incidents and other current issues. Updates from UKAS and matters arising with accreditation. Environment Agency feedback and discussions. Updates from the certifi cation bodies. Presentations on the industry PT Schemes. Feedback from standards bodies including CEN and ISO. A report on BREF’s, focusing on the waste incinerator sector at this meeting, Carbon and Biogenic measurements, the LCPD and MCPD, the EAs OMA and online real-time monitoring. We concluded the year with our Low Particulate Monitoring (LPM) task group and our EN14181 task group meetings in December. At the LPM meeting we reviewed the draft guidance note which came about following a number of meetings over the past 18 months, where the group reviewed past, current and new technologies. The comprehensive guidance which will be published by the spring of 2022, covers background, introduction, past methodologies and limitations, current methods, total particulate testing at low concentration, a review of current particulate sizing techniques , new technologies and innovations. The EN14181 task group was formed to review, discuss and address current and known issues. The group had presentations
on fl ow Method Implementation Document (MID), update AST failures, CO2 and N2
O requirements, AST failures and the potential causes, data verifi cation and QAL 2 and Data verifi cation, the task group will be looking at creating industry guidance on the topics discussed. The next round of task group meetings will be taking place February/March.
Focus on training
The STA is committed to encouraging the personal and professional development of practicing source testers and students, and provide training courses on various aspects of emission monitoring.
Following the challenges facing us all due to the COVID-19 pandemic we had to rethink the ways we conduct our business, this is when the STA introduced online training courses. Our courses are carried out live over Microsoft Teams allowing participants and trainers to interact as though they were in the same room. The syllabuses of the STA training courses can be found on our website
