UK Focus iii New reference material helps keep drinking water safe

The UK’s National Measurement Laboratory (NML), hosted at LGC, is pleased to announce the launch of a new certifi ed reference material, LGC6028 Hard drinking water – metals (lower levels), with values traceable to the SI (International System of Units). The elements present in drinking water are regulated through legislation. These limits ensure the water is safe for the consumer, thus, it is important for the drinking water industry to meet these standards.

The NML team at LGC has produced drinking water reference materials for many years, developing hard and soft drinking water materials containing elements at the regulation limits. The important new reference material is characterised for 26 elements at levels lower than the regulation limits, which more closely resembles the samples laboratories see in routine testing.

Gill Holcombe, Head of the Reference Material Production Team, NML at LGC, said, “We are happy that our reference material has been produced within LGC’s scope of accreditation to ISO 17034. The material will be useful for laboratories as part of their quality assurance system when measuring elements in water at these more challenging low levels.” The material was characterised through measurements carried out at the NML and an inter-laboratory study that involved 26 different national and international laboratories.

Despite the need for these measurements in the industry, there are very few reference materials on the market with this range of elements and at these levels. This innovative new Reference Material addresses that need and helps laboratories carry out reliable analyses in drinking water, ultimately ensuring safer products for consumers. Weatherproof noise-activated hearing protection signs

One of Pulsar Instruments’ most popular noise warning products, the Pulsar SafeEar, has now been made weatherproof. This new IP65 rated weatherproof noise activated warning sign lights up to warn site workers and visitors when noise levels have exceeded a pre-set decibel trigger. The sign will indicate that hearing protection must be worn, and when the light goes off workers know it is safe to remove their hearing PPE.

The SafeEar is ideal for industrial processes, construction sites, outdoor maintenance areas, exteriors of business premises and environments where water or high levels of moisture and dust may be present.

These signs don’t have to be only used outside. As the signs are IP65 rated they can be used in any area where moisture might be present or in areas that undergo high levels of industrial cleaning. They can also be used outside business premises to help people keep their noise levels down to reduce the risks of noise complaints.

Within the fl ow metering industry, wiring a fl ow meter is often second nature to experienced engineers and may seem intuitive for established customers. However, Titan’s fl ow meters are used throughout a wide variety of industries, processes and applications. New customers unfamiliar with fl ow metering solutions, may fi nd themselves in turbulent water if the meters are wired incorrectly during the installation process.

To combat this problem, Titan Enterprises have released video tutorials illustrating correct wiring of their pulse precision fl ow measurement devices to support customers with the installation of fl ow meters into their applications.

The majority of Titan’s fl ow meters use transistors which can be damaged through simple wiring mistakes, resulting in a defunct meter before the customer has even started. By providing customers with clear visual methods of how to install a fl ow meter and correct wiring to the power source, customers’ time and money are saved for these preventable errors.

“Although all Titan fl ow measurement devices are supported with written data and instruction sheets, through our ISO 9001 examination of returns and call logs, we have found that a large percentage of fl ow meter installation issues result from mis- wiring,” stated Jeremy Thorne, Production Manager with Titan Enterprises.

Neil Hannay, Senior R&D Engineer at Titan Enterprises, commented: “For customers who are new to our fl ow meters, visual demonstrations for wiring the fl ow measurement devices will help to reduce simple errors that cost customers time and money.

“YouTube is a very accessible platform and is a great delivery method for Titan fl ow meter instructional videos. As we don’t carry out on-site fl ow meter installations ourselves, providing visual tutorials are a useful way to illustrate correct wiring methods which we anticipate will reduce the number of unnecessary returns and rebuilds.”

Video tutorials currently available on the Titan website include wiring requirements for: Titan’s beverage fl ow meter; Turbine fl ow meters within Titan’s 800 series, 900 series and FT2 fl ow transducers; Titan’s OG2 oval gear fl ow meter.

These fl ow metering instruction videos will be expanded to include a full range of fl ow meter devices in order to help customers get the best out of their meters and to ensure that the meters are performing to their most effi cient levels within customer applications.

Does your nitrogen generator save time and money?

For More Info, email: email:

Peak Scientifi c have recently introduced the latest addition to the Infi nity series of compressor-free nitrogen generators for analytical labs, the Infi nity XE 60. This nitrogen gas generator is designed as a versatile solution for a range of applications including Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry, Evaporative Light Scattering Detection, Sample Evaporation, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance and Fourier Transform/ Mass Spectrometry, Infi nity XE 60 delivers nitrogen at fl ow rates ranging from 10- 520 litres per minute, and purity between 95-99.5%, depending on fl ow rate.

Offering a cost effective alternative to gas cylinders in a space-saving nitrogen solution, the Infi nity XE 60’s Intelligent Membrane Management (IMM) uniquely optimises air consumption, reducing laboratory costs and carbon footprint. With Peak’s expert knowledge in gas generation technologies, they have designed this new way of managing input to the generator from the external compressor based on the application’s demand and the type of external air compressor.

With this new technology, wear and tear on external compressors can be reduced as air consumption is optimised by the generator which extends instrument life, improves power consumption and, ultimately, reduces cost of ownership for customers.

Designed to grow with the lab’s gas demands, Infi nity XE 60 can have its nitrogen output increased on-site, within the same product footprint up to a maximum of 520 litres per minute. Alternatively, labs can opt for a secondary output of dry air up to 210 litres per minute.

Petra Gierga, Product Manager at Peak Scientifi c said: “Following rigorous testing, we’re delighted to bring the Infi nity XE 60 to the market.

“Building upon the knowledge we’ve gained over the creation of the Infi nity series, what really makes this product unique is our innovative Intelligent Membrane Management technology, which can help to reduce cost of ownership and carbon footprint for labs, along with the ability to expand the fl ow rate of the product quite signifi cantly in the fi eld.

The Infi nity XE 60 is designed as a versatile solution for a wide range of applications.

“Normally, if your lab adds more instruments or newer instruments which require more gas, a new generator is required. With Infi nity XE 60, the product can have its capacity increased to meet the growing gas demands of the lab without changing the footprint required for the product which is already extremely compact.

“Our sales teams can be consulted directly for further information on Infi nity XE 60 and to place an order for the generator.”

Peak Scientifi c’s Infi nity XE 60 comes with a fully comprehensive 2 year warranty subject to meeting the company’s terms of service. More information online: ilmt.co/PL/kOBD 55877pr@reply-direct.com
