Multihop Radio Connects Directly to Sensors and Probes
A new radio from Banner Engineering (Belgium) combines wireless transceiver, power supply and I/O circuits in one compact housing.
The DX80DR MultiHop Radio connects sensors directly to the network, eliminating need for data loggers, power supplies, PLCs or HMIs at the sensor location.
The radio is compatible with all industrial signals but also with specific instruments including moisture sensors, strain gauges, water quality indicators, flow counter, irrigation valves and temperature transmitters.
The enhanced radios expand the capability of Banner’s SureCross wireless solutions in numerous industries including oil & gas, composting, grain handling, water monitoring, aquaculture, irrigation, parking, flood warning and facilities monitoring.
The increased capability of the radio allows real-time access to information that was previously logged at sensor sites for later download. I/O terminals are provided for thermocouples, digital and analog input and output, battery operated irrigation valve operation, soil and water sensors. RS485 Modbus RTU connection is built in.

Radios can be powered by 10-30 VDC, battery or solar power supply, allowing wireless repeaters to be placed where no power is available.
Banner can provide wireless connections ranging from the simple “point to point” system to those spanning hundreds of square kilometres and thousands of points.

5 Year Contract to Supply Sludge Measurement Equipment
Pulsar Process Measurement (UK) have been awarded a five-year exclusive framework contract to supply Wessex Water with Sludge Finder 2 Sludge Interface measurement equipment.
Sludge Finder 2 uses an acoustic, sonar technology to measure crucial sludge interface levels, drawing on Pulsar’s knowledge of echo processing and analysis to identify the changes in density that represent the sludge interfaces. Pulsar’s Viper transducer is a self-cleaning, maintenance-free unit that sits below the sludge surface emitting sonar pulses that are then analysed in the Sludge Finder 2 controller.
Sludge Finder 2 has recently added the ability to measure two interface points using the same transducer, so that a single unit can monitor, measure and report both FLOC and RAS levels.
Wessex Water selected Sludge Finder 2 following a comprehensive tender exercise, which evaluated both technical performance and total cost of ownership.

Northern Ireland Water operate a number of potable water plants around Lough Erne and the River Derg, these waterways are extremely popular with tourists and are used for pleasure crafts of various sizes, from jetskis to fully fitted 6 berth cruisers. These watercraft create an ongoing risk of floating oil from poorly maintained engines, as the watercraft have access to within 10 metres of the main intake points an automatic alarm system is required.
The previously installed instruments suffered from repeated failures of their fuse type mechanism, Partech (UK) 7300w² Monitor with OilTechw² FLT Sensor has a non-contact optical system which does not require routine maintain and automatically clears the alarm once the oil pollution has moved away. The sensor's float arrangement allows the sensor to move with changes in water level and the signal processing in both the sensor and the monitor allow small disturbances to be ignored whilst producing a reliable alarm of a fault condition.
The Killyhelvin plant operates a magnetite process which is vulnerable to oil contamination, so the alarm system that has been installed by ATG Group is particularly important to prevent damage to the process. Further installations are planned for a range of plants across Northern Ireland based on the success of these instruments.
