UK Focus A Revolution in On-Line Liquid Analysis
BioTector Analytical Systems Ltd. (Ireland) manufactures an innovative range of on-line liquid analysers, which apply a totally new approach to eliminating the many problems associated with on-line TOC, TN and TP measurement.
The BioTector is designed to analyse everything – from clean water to the most corrosive & polluted samples, with no filtering requirements. It’s patented oxidation method is what makes the BioTector unique. This oxidation process, known as Two Stage Advanced Oxidation (TSAO) is extremely aggressive and is therefore totally self-cleaning (Hydroxyl Radicals at an oxidation potential of 2.8 is only below fluorine). The reaction is unaffected by Chlorides (salts) up to 30% and the system can handle oils, fats and calcium up to 12.5%. Hence the BioTector is deemed to be the most reliable on-line liquid analyser on the market, with 6 month service intervals and greater than 99.7% uptime with an accuracy of +/- 3%. It is designed so that there is no drift and therefore calibration is not required for the correct operation of the system.
The BioTector makes direct measurements without dilution in 6.5 minutes (TOC) and on a wide variety of ranges from 0-5mg c/l all the way up to 100,000mg c/l.
Up to 86,000 samples per year can be successfully measured by the BioTector and the analysers can be calibrated to read TOC, TN, NO3, TKN, TP, COD, BOD, TC, TIC and VOC.
There are now over 500 BioTector units installed worldwide, many of which are operating in applications that would have been impossible with conventional technologies. Reader Reply Card no 179 Quality Solutions for Air Sampling & Particle Analysis
Copley Scientific (UK) has published a new version of its ‘Quality Solutions for Air Sampling & Particle Analysis’ brochure, which not only details available products, but also provides background information across different areas of testing. The brochure is available in hard copy from Copley Scientific or may be viewed and downloaded from the company’s website
www.copleyscientific.com
Through its strategic partnership with aerosol particle science experts MSP Corporation, Copley Scientific is a major supplier of research grade air sampling and aerosol characterisation products, serving markets outside the USA. Offering instrumentation that ranges from general purpose particle spectrometers through to sophisticated impactors for comprehensive particle characterisation, personal air samplers and specialised fibre monitors, Copley Scientific’s portfolio of products meet a broad range of measurement and monitoring needs.
The new brochure adds a number of products recently incorporated into the range, including: the latest version
of the Wide-Range Particle Spectrometer with extended measurement range and the inclusion of an electrical ioniser that eliminates the use of radioactive sources for charge neutralisation; the multi-function Model 1500 Aerosol Generator and Monitor for producing highly monodisperse aerosols, and which features both classification and monitoring capabilities; and the Fibre Monitor Model 7400, for detection and enumeration of potentially hazardous airborne fibres.
Reader Reply Card no 180 Specific Hydrogen Monitors Chosen by BP Refinery
Environmental instrumentation specialist Quantitech launched a new hydrogen detection technology in the UK towards the end of 2007 and Managing Director Keith Golding is delighted to report, "the technology is proving popular in a wide variety of applications and has recently been chosen by BP for process analysis at its Cherry Point refinery in Washington, USA."
The unique hydrogen monitoring instrumentation is manufactured by H2scan Corporation, based in California, and is distributed exclusively in the UK and Ireland
by Quantitech Ltd.
Founded in 2002, H2scan Corporation has been built around a hydrogen specific sensor technology that was originally developed in the U.S. National Laboratory at Sandia. Since that time H2scan has developed a range of advanced portable and
fixed monitors for the specific measurement of hydrogen in mixtures, without interference from other gases.
In-line process hydrogen monitoring versions of the technology, the HY-OPTIMA 700 analysers, have been ordered by the BP facility after a successful trial which resulted in good performances in a high percentage, harsh contaminant (H2S) and multi-component process gas in comparison with traditional process analysers.
Explaining the reason for H2scan’s success, BP’s Analyser Engineer, Ryan Holgate said: “H2scan participated in a competitive bidding process with gas chromatographs and was selected based on a number of factors including performance, cost and maintainability.”
The H2scan analysers will provide real-time measurement without the need for valve switching, frequent
calibrations and is designed to save considerable retail space in BP’s analyser shelters. H2scan’s success with BP provides a good example of widespread acceptance of H2scan’s miniaturised and advanced analyser technologies in oil refineries.
Keith Golding added: “H2scan’s hydrogen specific solid-state sensing technology is able to detect hydrogen against virtually any background gases without false readings or expensive support equipment. These instruments
are able to detect hydrogen concentrations from 15 ppm to 100% over a wide range of temperatures without cross- sensitivity to other substances.
"We are pleased to hear about H2scan’s success in the USA and look forward to bringing the benefits of this technology to the UK petrochemical industry."
