Anton Paar’s PMA 500/300, ABA 500/300, TAG 500/300 and CLA 5:

Testing Renewable Fuels and Environmentally Friendly Lubricants The importance of investigating alternative resources to substitute fuels derived from fossil resources has grown significantly in the last decades. The trend is being further reinforced by rapidly decreasing geological oil reserves, global warming, and increased environmental awareness. All these factors require a change of today’s energy mix, ultimately leading to a more sustainable future.

For storage, transport, and handling of flammable or combustible liquids, such as fuels, the flash point is one of the most important parameters in terms of safety. The flash point is used to define the hazard classification of liquids. Not surprisingly, flash point values are also part of fuel product specifications. Depending on the product, e.g. jet fuel or diesel, different methods are prescribed to determine the flash point.

Anton Paar’s, Pensky-Martens, Abel, Tagliabue, and Cleveland flash point testers, PMA 500, PMA 300, ABA 500, ABA 300, TAG 500, TAG 300 and CLA 5 are perfectly suited for measuring the flash point of renewable fuels and environmentally acceptable lubricants.

Efficiency Meets Sustainability – Biodiesel Measurements Made Easy Testing of Environmentally Acceptable Lubricants (EALs)

Our next-generation flash point tester can save you time and costs with its unique features. For example, the patented ceramic coated electric igniter system of the PMA 500, PMA 300, TAG 500, TAG 300, ABA 500, and ABA 300 have a 10-time longer lifetime than other igniters on the market and yet are less expensive. Thus, it saves igniter costs and maintenance time. Our PMA 500 is equipped with an efficient cooling system that easily saves 10 % of your measurement time, increasing the sample throughput while ABA 500 and TAG 500 on the other hand can be operated with and without an external chiller, depending on the flash point temperature – use an external chiller for flash point temperatures below 10 °C only. The two-in-one, air- and liquid-supported Peltier System with our ABA 500 and TAG 500 will provide you excellent flexibility.

All our flash point testers deliver precise results according to given standard methods, are intuitive to use, and easy to clean – saving time before, during, and after a measurement. More information online: ilmt.co/PL/65Ke

Automated Bitumen Viscosity Measurement According to ASTM D4402, AASHTO T316

and DIN EN 13302

Viscosity is a critical measure of bitumen’s resistance to flow, directly impacting its handling, mixing, and application. Anton Paar’s ViscoQC 300 rotational viscometer setup for high-temperature measurements is designed to provide a stable and precisely controlled environment for samples such as bitumen. The temperature device offers a temperature range from 25 °C to 300 °C and is fully controlled via the viscometer’s display and requires no additional temperature controller or PC.

Customized automation: Save time, increase efficiency

The ability to control the entire setup via the viscometer’s display empowers the operator to easily configure their own measurement methods. Standard methods such as ASTM D4402, AASHTO T316 or DIN EN 13302 can be simulated and the entire measurement process fully automated, freeing up operator time.

Users can define test parameters such as temperature, shear rate/speed, testing time and more. Additionally, users can create temperature-ramps, run speed scans to determine shear thinning (non-Newtonian) behaviour or create a sophisticated multi-step method with up to 40 steps. The ViscoQC 300 empowers users to optimize their testing processes without the need for separate temperature program synchronization, considerably simplifying their daily measurements.

A specific highlight is the already pre-programmed ASTM D4402 method. With just a push of a button, you can run a fully automated and compliant test without the need for any further interference.

Temperature precision: Crucial for bitumen measurements

Accurate temperature control is essential for bitumen viscosity measurements due to bitumen’s high specific heat capacity and low thermal conductivity, which lead to a long temperature equilibration time. If the sample is not fully equilibrated, it can result in incorrect viscosity readings. To address this, the ViscoQC includes the T-Ready™ function, which ensures that the sample itself has reached the correct temperature before measurements begin. This feature saves time by preventing unnecessary waiting or premature measurements, ensuring accurate and reliable viscosity values.

Preventing instrument breakdowns

Viscometer failures are often caused by improper spindle attachment, which can damage the mechanics of the device. The ViscoQC 300 mitigates this risk with its magnetic spindle coupling, simplifying attachment and preventing damage from incorrect installation. The hidden champion: Automatic spindle recognition with the unique ToolmasterTM feature, ensuring valid and traceable measurements.

Anton Paar’s SVM: Efficient Characterization of Biofuels

The growing emphasis on climate-friendly solutions is increasingly impacting various aspects of daily life, particularly in the transportation sector. Sustainable fuels, including biofuels, play a crucial role in reducing net carbon dioxide emissions and decreasing reliance on fossil fuels.

Biofuel standards and regulations

In both the United States and the European Union, new standards and regulations have been established to define specific requirements and limits for biofuels. For biodiesel, the applicable standards vary depending on the biofuel content: ASTM D6751 and EN 14214 apply to 100 % biodiesel, EN 16709 governs B20 and B30 blends, ASTM D7467 covers blends ranging from B6 to B20, EN 16734 applies to B10, while ASTM D975 and EN 590 are standards for petroleum diesel containing up to 5 % biodiesel in America and 7 % biofuel in Europe. Sustainable aviation fuels on the other hand are governed by standards such as ASTM D1655 and ASTM D7566.

Importance of viscosity and density in biofuel testing

Viscosity and density are critical quality parameters in these specifications, both of which can be easily measured with SVM viscometers. The SVM series complies with ASTM D7042 and ISO 23581 for viscosity testing, as well as D4052 and ISO 12185 for density measurement. This compliance allows for full certification of finished fuels for these parameters, in line with the above-mentioned specifications, across all specified temperatures. The SVM 3001 Cold Properties model even determines additional parameters, such as the cloud point of diesel fuel or the freezing point of aviation turbine fuel.

Anton Paar’s SVM viscometer models

Anton Paar provides a diverse range of SVM models to cater to various testing requirements. The SVM 1X01 series is ideal for quick and straightforward kinematic viscosity or density tests, while the advanced SVM X001 series offers precise measurements across a wide temperature range (-60 °C to +135 °C; down to -20 °C without an external chiller) and a viscosity range from 0.2 mm²/s to 30,000 mm²/s. For even greater convenience, SVM X001 models can be optionally equipped with an autosampler capable of handling up to 71 samples.

Enhanced efficiency and reliability

All SVMs feature a robust metal measuring cell, which eliminates the risk of broken glass capillaries and offers enhanced reliability and longer service life while reducing consumable costs. With a 150 % increase in throughput compared to manual methods and a minimal sample and solvent requirement of only 1.5 mL per test, the SVM greatly boosts laboratory efficiency. Its intuitive touchscreen interface simplifies operation, eliminating the need for external PCs for sample management or data storage.

State-of-the-art testing

For laboratories focused on accurate and efficient biofuel testing, Anton Paar’s SVM viscometer series offers an optimal solution. With precise measurement capabilities, robust design, and compliance with key industry standards, the SVM series simplifies biofuel certification and boosts lab efficiency. Upgrade to Anton Paar’s SVM viscometers to ensure reliable results and stay at the forefront of biofuel testing technology.
