44 Measurement and Testing Mobile Metal Analyser now Features Metal Database

Spectro Analytical Instruments (Germany) now offers direct access to its SPECTRO Metal Database on the latest versions of its SPECTROTEST -- the most powerful mobile metal analyser in the SPECTRO product line. Users will not only save time conducting metal assessments but will no longer need to purchase various catalogs of metal standards. Stored in the SPECTRO Metal Database are specifications for more than 150,000 metal alloys according to international standards for steels and non-ferrous metals.

The Metal Database serves as a universal tool for providing detailed information about metal alloys and their mechanical properties. Among its strengths is the ability to search for suitable alloys, to identify unknown materials based on the chemical content, and to export material specifications for use on a particular spectrometer. The software supports users working with the SPECTRO iSORT, xSORT, SPECTROTEST (additional direct access), SPECTROMAXx and SPECTROLAB. All new SPECTROTEST (TXC03) analyzers have a test version of the SPECTRO Metal Database pre-installed.

“For many using the SPECTROTEST, elemental content is not always a prime interest. For rapid inspections of incoming and outgoing goods, it is often sufficient to know whether or not the tested metal corresponds to given specifications, the delivery note is correct or the steel accurately identified,” explains Marcus Freit, Spectro Product Manager for mobile metal analysers.

Even previous versions of the SPECTROTEST could answer many of these questions using pre-installed grade libraries, in which common grades are stored. The materials library could also be extended with customer-specific entries.

With the new SPECTRO Metal Database, this has been made even easier. With unknown alloys, it is possible for users to search for materials. Pressing a key starts the extended material search from the measuring screen. It is then possible to determine within which material specifications the analysis fits. By importing materials from the list of results, the alloys can be quickly and simply entered into the library on the SPECTROTEST.

Introduced in 2012, the current version of the SPECTROTEST mobile metal analyser provides outstanding analytical performance. Designed for high sample throughput, the SPECTROTEST analyser offers a light weight ergonomic design and user-friendly operation. Its highly efficient plasma generator delivers several hundred measurements from a single battery charge. The instrument features a pluggable probe with an optional integrated UV optic that can be used in spark and arc mode.

In the arc excitation mode, the SPECTROTEST is used for, among other things, the identification of low alloy steels based on the carbon content, and in spark excitation mode, for the analysis of carbon, phosphorous and sulphur together with the identification of duplex steels based on the nitrogen content along with other applications. Its iCAL (intelligent calibration logic) logic system monitors the state of the measuring system during operation. Proper standardisation of the SPECTROTEST is ensured with a single iCAL control sample.

Oxford Instruments (UK) have introduced a new portable arc / spark metal analyser, the PMI-MASTER Smart. It is the only true portable and full range optical emission spectrometer in the market, designed for metal analysis especially in hard to reach places. Despite its 33 lbs/15kg light weight and compact dimensions, the PMI-MASTER Smart offers full analysis functions and high performance. The powerful rechargeable battery pack and well thought-out transportation concept complement the mobility.

Metal analysis, grade identification and sorting – the PMI-MASTER Smart offers the full range of analysis functions. In comparison to other compact size OES analysers, it offers a wide wavelength range at optimum resolution. The patent pending optics, made of carbon fibre, is the key. Mechanical expansion and tension, triggered by temperature changes and distortion due to change of position are virtually eliminated, guaranteeing stable measuring results. “Our goal was to develop a truly portable metal analyser without compromising on the functions and analysis quality. The PMI-MASTER Smart even exceeded our own targets.” says Vito Angona, General Manager of Oxford Instruments Analysis GmbH.

Power connections are typically not available in hard to reach places. Equipped with a rechargeable and optional replacement battery pack the PMI-MASTER Smart is truly cordless and completely independent from mains supply. The battery pack provides power for the analysis of some hundred samples in ARC and/or SPARK mode, and 7 hours in standby. It also can be operated with the external power supply / charger, with or without battery and even during recharging.

The cases for the transportation of the PMI-MASTER Smart and its accessories easily fit into a car boot. Stacked up they can be dragged with a foldable trolley. For more intensive use a cart, holding a 10l bottle of Argon, probe and all accessories is also available. If you need to climb up to reach the place of analysis, the PMI-MASTER Smart can safely be carried on the back with the back pack frame.

Three different probes are available for the PMI-MASTER Smart. The UVTouch probe analyses low carbon content (L grade separation) besides many others, the arc probe sorts different metals with Arc in air atmosphere in only 3 seconds, the rugged spark probe analysis standard elements with minimum Argon consumption (Linde ECOCYL 1l Argon bottle recommended).

Measuring, Control and Monitoring Catalogue Available for Download

The AFRISO (Germany) catalogue 2013/2014 in English is now available for download. A complete range of measuring, control and monitoring instruments and systems for building technology, industry and environmental production is presented on 800 pages. A technology selection with more than 25,000 products from a single supplier, from the smallest pressure gauges all the way to stationary gas analysis systems - making sure that processes at the customer’s premises work with maximum efficiency and minimised effort.

The catalogue features a fold-out navigation bar with two tables of contents sorted by product range and industry to allow for rapid access to the complete product portfolio. A clear and easy to understand structure with relevant selection criteria and overview tables make sure the customers get directly to their products at maximum speed. The individual catalogue pages comprise detailed product descriptions which provide information on applications, descriptions, technical specifications, options and accessories and also contain discount classes, part numbers, packing units, prices and, in many cases, dimensional drawings. All new and improved products are highlighted by a "NEW" label. The catalogue is subdivided into 17 clearly structured chapters.

Navigation in a catalogue has never been easier: lateral tabs get you directly to the tables of contents of the individual chapters with references to the product pages and overview tables. A comprehensive index with product names and generic terms provides easy access to a wealth of information.
