Flow Meter Receives FM, CSA Approvals For Application In Rugged Process Environments


The advanced and highly accurate ST75 Flow Meter from US maunufacturer Fluid Components International (FCI), which is designed for process gas, fuel gas, inert gas, waste gases and air in small line sizes, is now FM and CSA approved for safety in rugged process industry plant environments.


FM Global certifies products to assure customers that they conform to the highest national and international safety standards for loss protection and risk management. The FM Approved mark assures FCI’s customers that the ST75 Flow Meter has been deemed to perform reliably and safely, backed by independent scientific research and testing.


A certification mark from CSA International means that the ST75 Flow Meter has been formally tested and inspected and determined to meet the highest standards for safety and performance. CSA International tests products for compliance with safety and performance standards at both the national and international levels.


The highly accurate ST75 Flow Meter is designed small line sizes ranging from 0.25 to 2.0 inches and offers a rich set of features. The ST75 provides three unique outputs: the mass flow rate, totalised flow and media temperature. It is ideal for applications in a wide range of industries including chemical, electric power, food/beverage, advanced materials, pharmaceuticals, semiconductor and more.


Media temperature compensation ensures that the ST75 maintains consistent performance in rugged environments and features accuracy to ±2% of reading with ±0.5% repeatability. Its precision flow element has a no-moving parts design that employs platinum RTD sensors embedded in equal mass thermowells with microprocessor electronics calibrated to laboratory standards for a wide range of gases: natural gas, methane, nitrogen CO2, argon, all inert gases, compressed air and more. Operating over a wide flow range, from 0.01 to 559 SCFM (0.01 to 950 NCMH) depending on line size, the ST75 Flow Meter is equally well suited for low flow and high flow operations. For variable process conditions, the ST75 is factory preset to a wide turndown range at 10:1 to 100:1.


In hazardous factory areas and crowded plants where explosive, flammable or toxic gases may be present near transmitting electronics, the ST75’s remote mounting capabilities ensure an accurate and low-maintenance measurement solution for small line size gas and air flow applications in hard to reach locations. The remote mount transmitter, which includes a full digital display, can be mounted up to 50 feet (15 meters) away from its thermal mass flow sensor in the process piping and connected via two 0.50-inch FNPT cables.


The ST75 Flow Meter’s fully scalable 4-20mA and 0-10V standard outputs are user assignable to flow rate and/or temperature and a 0-1kHz pulse output of total flow. The instrument can be ordered for input power with either 18 to 36 Vdc or 85 to 265 Vac, with or without a built-in LCD digital display.


The ST75 offers direct-flow measurement for higher performance at a lower cost with proven thermal dispersion technology, eliminating the need for temperature sensors, flow computers, or other devices that are required with orifice plates, Venturis, Vortex shedding, and other meters. A no-moving parts design ensures superior service life. There are no orifices or inlets to clog or foul, which significantly reduces scheduled maintenance and unplanned shut-downs.


The ST75 is enclosed in a rugged, all-metal, dust and water resistant NEMA Type 4X (IP66) rated package designed for hazardous area installations and includes a rugged sensing element constructed with all welded 316 stainless steel and Hastelloy-C tips. ATEX/IEC approvals include: Zone 1, II 2 G Ex d IIC T6 . . . T3; II 2 D Ex tD A21, IP67 T90º . . . T300º.

Emerson Process Management announces the launch of the new Raptor tank gauging system. The system is based on open technology and is fully scalable. The Raptor system includes new safety technologies to help protect plant assets, the environment and human lives. One example is the unique 2-in-1 functionality—with two independent gauges in one single enclosure—providing SIL 3 safety for overfill prevention. There are also a number of other dual redundant configurations available to suit individual tank safety requirements.


Raptor is built around a new line of 0.5 mm (0.02 in.) precision radar level gauges, plus ultra stable temperature transmitters with 3- or 4-wire multiple spot sensors. The result is the highest available precision in net volume calculations for custody transfer and inventory management. Equipment such as pressure and water bottom measurement sensors can also be added as well as operator interface software. Having access to reliable and accurate tank content information in real time is key to high plant efficiency, as the operators can handle even more tanks, fill the tanks higher and better utilise the storage capacity.


Raptor reduces installation costs substantially. The unique bus-powered 2-wire Tankbus is based on self-configuring


FOUNDATIONTM fieldbus technology, allowing easy start-up and integration of all system units. The tank units are intrinsically safe which means no expensive cable conduits are required. Communication to the control room can be made using Modbus over most existing cabling, or using other fieldbus standards.


There are many tank farms with gauging based on older technology, even in fairly recent installations, leading to maintenance problems and low performance. Raptor can emulate gauges from other manufacturers. This means the customers can add Raptor units to their existing system using the same cabling and control room infrastructure.


The Raptor system will include Emerson’s Smart Wireless functionality, which eliminates the need for long distance signal wiring. This is especially valuable when no suitable ground cabling is available and it is necessary to cross roads, or when ground conditions make cabling expensive. Wireless communication can also be used as a redundant and independent communication path alongside traditional wired communication.

New, 4-20mA Transmitter Option for Hazardous Location Differential Pressure Switch


Mid West Instrument’s (USA) new Model 220 now provides a simple, low cost Loop Powered 828 VDC two wire 4- 20mA Transmitter option using the same CSA, UL & ATEX rated sensor and explosion-proof housing used on their popular Model 220 with switches. The transmitter with an industrial type terminal strip is housed in heavy-duty, cast aluminum housing. Field wiring uis simple; access is through a ½” NPT port. Accuracy is ±2% from 20% to 100% of full scale. Indicator accuracy is ±2% and is independent of the transmitter.


The new Model 220 piston operated unit has pressure containing elements of aluminum or 316 S.S. with 316 S.S. and ceramic terminals. Safe working pressure is 4000 PSIG (275 bar) The new Model 220 has full over-range protection up to full rated working pressures. Differential ranges are available from 0-5 PSID to 0-100 PSID (0.3 bar to 7 bar). Weatherproof construction includes standard 4 ½” dial and shatter resistant lens – the instrument also has corrosion resistant gauge fronts. The unit, which comes with a 5 year warranty, is not yet listed for use in hazardous conditions (at time of publication December 2010).

New Mass Flowmeters and Controllers to Manage Gas Flow in Specialty and Scientific Research Systems


A new series of Mass Flowmeters and Controllers designed to accurately monitor and control the flow of a wide range of gases electronically is now available from Concoa (USA). The new series is part of the company’s extensive line of specialty and scientific research gas systems and equipment.


Series MFM Thermal Mass Flowmeters and MFC Thermal Mass Flow Controllers are versatile and designed to be easy to use even for beginners


to this type of flow monitoring or control technology. The units have a standard maximum working pressure of 500 psig and are supplied standard with correction factors for Air, Helium Hydrogen and Carbon Dioxide, with other factors available on request.


Made from 316L stainless steel bar stock, units are available in a broad range of flows from 0-10 sccm to 0-20 lpm. Their accuracy is very high at + 1% of full scale, and each unit is supplied with a NIST Traceable Calibration Certificate. Circuitry is designed to withstand High RF interference and has a fast response that is proven reliable for performance and accuracy.


Both a single- and four-channel 5-digit display and controller with 16-bit resolution giving a reading accuracy of 0.02% with field selectable voltages of either 110 volt DC or 220 volt DC are available to monitor and control from one to four units. All of the product range is marked CE for compliance with European Union directives for use or sale in the European Union.
