Measurement and Testing ViscoScope – Te Easy Way to Measure Viscocity


The ViscoScope process viscometers from Marimex (Canada) are widely used throughout the world to measure viscosities of liquids continuously in-line. The measurement system consists of a sensor, transmitter and transmission cable. For classified hazardous areas, safety barriers are added.


The sensor has no moving parts and is maintenance free. The viscosity is measured using a constant amplitude torsional oscillation principle. The sensor vibrates at a constant resonant frequency and shear. The power required to maintain the amplitude is a measure for the viscosity.


ViscoScope sensors are built for rough process environments. The sensors are orientation independent. They are rugged and can be applied to a wide variety of processes, such as pipelining, polymers, pharmaceutical, refining, pulp and paper etc. Viscosity from 0.5 cp to 5,000,000 cP can be measured. High pressure and high temperature sensors are available.


Two basic sensor models are available; VA-300 series provides the widest range of capabilities. VA-100 is a smaller simpler sensor, best suited for constant viscosity monitoring in OEM applications.


ViscoScope transmitters control the resonant frequency and constant amplitude, determined by the mechanical construction of the sensor. The received analog signal is then converted to viscosity. Two transmitter types are available; VS-4450 is a panel mount style transmitter and the VS-D250 is a DIN-Rail mount style transmitter. A Serial interface running Modbus protocol is provided and analog outputs are available.

High-Pecision Version of the World’s Smallest Digital Humidity Sensor


In April 2010 Sensirion (Switzerland) started serial production of the SHT21, the standard version of its new generation of digital humidity and temperature sensors. Now the sensor manufacturer is launching a high-precision version for applications with stringent accuracy requirements. The SHT25 rounds out the family of digital humidity sensors, in the same way as the high-end versions of the SHT1x and SHT7x series. This represents a milestone on the product roadmap of the world’s smallest digital humidity sensors.


The sensor achieves a typical accuracy of 1.8% RH (at 25°C) for relative humidity and -0.2°C for temperature. For both quantities, the tolerance is small even at the limits of the measuring range. The SHT25 is fully calibrated and exactly matches the other specifications of the SHT21. Among other things, the reflow-solderable SHT25 has an I2C interface and features outstanding stability along with extremely low power consumption.
