Pfeiffer Vacuum Develops Vacuum Solutions for European XFEL
The European X-Ray Free-Electron Laser (European XFEL) is a research facility generating ultrashort X-ray fl ashes: 27,000 times per second and with a brilliance that is a billion times higher than that of the best conventional X-ray radiation sources. The fl ashes are produced in underground tunnels and will allow scientists to map atomic details of viruses, fi lm chemical reactions, and study the processes in the interior of planets.
The processes at European XFEL require ultra-high (UHV) or high vacuum (HV) conditions. It is important to maintain a good level of vacuum so that the XFEL beam and high power lasers can propagate and interact with matter at the experiment stations without being affected by air molecules or hydrocarbons generating background signals on the detectors. Pfeiffer Vacuum, in cooperation with European XFEL, has developed solutions ranging from vacuum pumps to leak detectors to vacuum components for many vacuum applications at European XFEL. All solutions were exclusively tailored to the specifi c needs and demands of these applications.
“High vacuum applications at XFEL predominantly use Pfeiffer Vacuum turbopumps, controllers and gauges. Additionally, our portable pump carts are equipped with Pfeiffer Vacuum solutions,” said Ian Thorpe, instrument engineer for HED (High Energy Density) Instrument at XFEL. “It was important that the vacuum equipment could be integrated into the specifi c XFEL control system.”
HiPace turbopumps installed at XFEL
The idea to build the European XFEL was born at DESY (Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron), one of the world’s leading centres for the investigation of the structure of matter and a long-term partner of Pfeiffer Vacuum. Being the main shareholder of European XFEL, DESY collaborates on the construction, commissioning and operation of the 3.4-kilometre-long facility. Together with
international partners, DESY constructed the heart of the X-ray laser: the 1.7-kilometre-long superconducting accelerator including the electron source. It starts at the DESY site in Hamburg and stretches to the town of Schenefeld in the German federal state of Schleswig-Holstein.

Italian Scientist Wins 2017 Eppendorf & Science Prize
Flavio Donato
The Italian scientist Flavio Donato, PhD has won the 2017 Eppendorf & Science Prize for Neurobiology for his work on the driving forces that orchestrate the maturation of circuits representing space in the brain.
Beximco Pharma Commences Export to Canada
Beximco Pharmaceuticals Ltd has announced it has commenced the export of Olopatadine, an ophthalmic product for treating the symptoms of eye allergy, to Canada. This follows the approval of Olopatadine (0.1% solution) by Health Canada in October 2016 and is the fi rst time a pharmaceutical product from Bangladesh has been launched in this North American country.
According to IMS data, the current market size for Olopatadine eye drops in Canada is $14 million. The fi rst consignment was delivered on 16 September 2017 and the product will be distributed through the Company’s existing partner in Canada. Beximco Pharma’s second prescription product for the Canadian market is currently under evaluation by Health Canada, with approval expected by the fi rst quarter of 2018. There are also a number of products in the R&D pipeline which the Company expects to fi le in Canada.
Beximco Pharma Managing Director, Mr Nazmul Hassan MP,
commented: “Entry into the Canadian pharmaceutical market, following the successful launch of our fi rst product in the US last year, is a signifi cant step forward in strengthening our presence in North America. This is the fi rst time a pharmaceutical product manufactured in Bangladesh, notably a sterile ophthalmic product, has been exported to Canada. The launch of our second product in North America is another validation of our strength in offering specialised generic products in a global setting. We continue to focus on building a strong pipeline for prescription markets.”
Beximco Pharma’s ophthalmic unit is the only such facility in Bangladesh to be approved by the regulatory authorities of Europe, Australia and Canada. The Company has developed a global footprint, with sales to more than 50 countries.

Dr Donato carried out his research in the laboratory of Professors May-Britt Moser and Edvard Moser at the Kavli Institute of the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Trondheim. Flavio Donato’s work has revealed that, during development, stellate cells in the medial entorhinal cortex are the source of an activity-dependent instructive signal necessary for the maturation of those neurons that give us a sense of where we are. This fi nding proves the existence of autonomous, intrinsic drivers that guide the maturation of widespread regions of cortex from deep within the brain. Unravelling the unique contribution of these specifi c neuronal populations to the function of neural circuits will advance our understanding of how the brain processes abstract cognitive functions.
The annual US$25,000 Eppendorf & Science Prize for Neurobiology honours scientists, like Dr Donato, for their ground-breaking research. Flavio Donato is the 16th recipient of this international prize which is awarded jointly by Eppendorf and the journal Science. Researchers who are 35 years of age or younger and have made outstanding contributions to neurobiological research based on methods of molecular and cell biology are invited to apply. The next deadline for applications is 15 June, 2018. For more information about Dr Donato and the Eppendorf and Science Prize for Neurobiology, visit
