The FluidX™ IntelliXcap™ decapper from Brooks Life Science Systems is a novel, cost- effective, automated 96 tube format capper/decapper that allows for rapid switching between sample tube types reducing non-productive downtime.


Due to its unique interchangeable IntelliXcartridge™ system, the FluidX IntelliXcap™ accommodates all commercially available tubes. It is unlike other automated decapping systems which are designed for use with dedicated manufacturer brand sample tubes.


The proprietary self-release mechanism means cartridges can be exchanged in as little as 2 minutes, with a complete rack of 96 tubes being processed in 20 seconds, and allows efficient processing of mixed tube populations. With 96 individually electronic controlled cap drivers delivering the optimum torque for each tube, users can be confident of an effective seal every time.


Fitted with intelligent technology, IntelliXcap™ features a 12-laser light curtain which acts as a storage media detection sensor. Thus, decapping failures can be quickly and easily identified, preventing damage to liquid handling systems during downstream processing.


The modular system has been designed for broad spectrum appeal, allowing users to add additional functionality as budget and workload dictate. This makes it an ideal solution for medium to high throughput laboratories.


As a standalone system, IntelliXcap™ is quick and easy to install, with operation via a simple touch panel graphical interface.


The integration module features a common RS232 command set for incorporation with automated systems, reducing manual intervention, and minimising interruptions to workflow. In addition, the ability to track samples during processing can be achieved by means of a separate barcode module delivering full audit trail capabilities.

Gilson is pleased to announce the launch of the new qPCR Assistant software that reduces the hands-on sample preparation burden for researchers running PCR and qPCR experiments in translational science and other research areas.


With the increasing need for biomarker validation using qPCR and PCR techniques across a variety of biological samples, researchers are seeking new ways to maximise qPCR sample preparation accuracy and reproducibility, eliminate inherent variability and minimise sources of contamination. The qPCR Assistant is a workflow-focused solution, based on the recently introduced PIPETMAX automated ‘lab assistant’ pipetting station. Developed by molecular biologists, it puts molecular biologists in the driver’s seat by combining an intuitive user interface and versatile qPCR-focused design of experiment workflow with a familiar Gilson PIPETMAN-inside accurate automated ‘lab assistant’.


“I created a qPCR experiment from scratch in minutes with PIPETMAX qPCR Assistant, without having to know any details about liquid handling. The PIPETMAX qPCR Assistant also instructed me on the labware positions, how and what to prepare for each run, and exported a template file for my thermocycler, which made the whole process of creating and running the protocol very time efficient. The optimised qPCR plate setup enabled method and pipetting efficiency and the method traceability provides the reassurance of reproducible results,” said David Dobnik, PhD, GMO detection lab, Department of Systems Biology and Biotechnology, National Institute of Biology, Ljubljana, Slovenia.


The qPCR Assistant software also generates a traceability output report that provides the experimental design details and plate locations for the thermocycler. Repeating, qPCR experiments, is simplified with a drop-down menu and selecting your previously designed method. In addition, the traceability provides an added level of electronic security helping to eliminate manual errors, maximising reproducibility and further saving the researcher time.

Multifunctional Pump for Automated Dosing of Liquids


Systec Mediapump, the programmable multifunction pump for the manual or automated dosing of fluids from Systec GmbH, is available right now in a new and improved design. The performance of the electronically controlled peristaltic pump with its practical functionality and ease of operation speaks for itself. The dosing volume can be set from 0.1 ml to 99,999.9 ml. The system works with an accuracy of ± 0.5%, ensuring reproducible results thanks to its automatic calibration. Individually parameterisable programs are available in addition to the simple manual filling process.


A robust precision roller mechanism ensures the highest possible dosing accuracy even at high flow rates exceeding 2,500 ml/min, with the special roller head ensuring a continuous fluid flow with minimum pulsation. The Systec Mediapump is also particularly suitable for filling petri dishes with hot and viscous media.


Thanks to its well thought out design, the Systec Mediapump can also be used as a component of automated processes. It offers a high degree of flexibility because different tube sets can be programmed and used reproducibly. A novel tube bed mechanism facilitates the task of changing the tube sets.


All the functions are clearly laid out on the touchscreen of the Systec Mediapump together with the permanent display of the different parameters. Different languages and colour settings can be selected via the touchscreen.
