The company was founded by F. Kurt Retsch in Duesseldorf, Germany, in 1915. By 1923, the company’s first own piece of laboratory equipment was developed, a mortar mill, which became known as the Retsch Mill and is synonymous with the concept of easier and better laboratory work. The company moved to new offices in Haan in 1976, which with continual enlargements, is where the company sits today. Gradually Retsch managed the transition from a family business to an internationally active company with subsidiaries in the US, United Kingdom, Japan, China, South Korea, Italy and Norway. The affiliated company Retsch Technology completes the product portfolio with optical measurement systems for particle characterisation. Together with its international partners, the company is striving to expand its worldwide activities even further. Retsch will continue to set standards in the fields of size reduction and particle analysis and in this way make an active and dynamic contribution to the development of new materials and technologies.
Techne Ltd
Techne Ltd was formed by Dr Norman de Bruyne, an eminent physicist with a love of flying. His passion for flying led Dr de Bruyne to design and build his own aircraft. This experience highlighted the inadequacy of the then available casein-based glues. Dr de Bruyne, therefore established a company to develop better adhesives and in 1937 the company introduced Aerolite, an adhesive based on urea formaldehyde resins. Techne was established in 1948 in Duxford, near Cambridge to manufacture laboratory instrumentation for measuring the properties, specifically gelation time and glue viscosity of Dr de Bruyne’s new glues. In the past 15 years LabAsia have played an important role in promoting Techne’s products, particularly for those in revolutionary areas where it has been necessary to reach a wide number of customers from different fields. Techne and LabAsia have been working together for the past 15 years and we look forward to the next 15. One of the first products made by Techne was a gelation timer. The current models of gelation timer, GT-5 and GT-6 closely resemble the product first produced by Techne some 50 years ago. Techne also introduced its first temperature control unit, equivalent to the current TU-20 range and by the late 1950s, these units were being mass produced on an assembly line at a rate of 100 units per month. Production also started in the late 1950s on the SBS-2 fluidised sand bath, which was a unique alternative to the established salt bath. In the 1960s, Techne was one of the first manufacturers to introduce an electric block heater with the world-renown Dri-Block® range. Techne’s expansion globally lead to Techne Inc being opened in Princeton, New Jersey, USA. Throughout the 80s, Techne’s range further expanded with the advent of two innovations in the evolving molecular biology market; Techne's first hybridisation oven, the HB-1 and one of the world’s first thermal cyclers, the PHC-1. Techne ceased to be privately owned in 1994 and has recently been incorporated into a new company, Bibby Scientific Ltd and now stands alongside the Jenway and Stuart product ranges.
UVP - The World’s Source for BioImaging Systems
UVP, LLC began manufacturing and distributing ultraviolet products in 1932 with sales expansion into worldwide markets including Europe and Japan. The late 1989’s marked the development of imaging systems beyond the instant Polaroid camera. UVP was instrumental in producing the first scientific-grade gel documentation systems. Design of high resolution, advanced BioImaging Systems continues today with systems configured for fluorescent, colorimetric and chemiluminescent applications including Western, Northern and Southern blot, colony counting, 1D and 2D gel plus the iBox® Systems for small animal in vivo imaging.
