29 Bottled Water with Certified Water Quality

Merck Millipore recently announced the introduction of two types of bottled water with certified water quality: Water for Cell Culture and Water for Molecular Biology. Water for Cell Culture and Water for Molecular Biology are produced in an ISO®

for research use by scientists performing critical cell culture or molecular biology experiments.

Both water types are sterile. Additionally, Water for Cell Culture is cell-culture tested and free of pyrogens, mycoplasma, calcium and magnesium. Water for Molecular Biology is RT-PCR tested and is RNase- free, DNase-free, protease-free, calcium-free and magnesium-free. Jean-François Pilette, Lab Water Group Product Manager, explains that a Merck Millipore proprietary process is used to manufacture the bottled water.

“We’re able to produce high-quality ultrapure water without the need for toxic chemicals such as DEPC (diethylpyrocarbonate),” he said. “Following the purification process, the ultrapure water is aseptically filled into sterile PET containers. We’ve applied our unique combination of knowledge and expertise to successfully produce and control bottled water in an ISO 9001 / cGMP environment,” he continued. “We expect researchers who need small volumes of ultrapure water for their cell culture or molecular biology work to fully benefit from these new products,” he concluded.

For easy traceability, bottles are delivered with duplicate labels, allowing one to be removed and kept in a lab notebook for future reference concerning water quality and lot numbers in experiments. A space on the label is provided for handwritten entry of the opening date by the researcher. The new bottled water is available in a convenient range of volumes (1L, 0.5L, 125mL) and packaging options to match researchers’ needs.

Circle no. 413 Improved Methods for Detecting Emerging Contaminants in Water Supplies

Agilent Technologies, Inc announced an agreement with Dr Shane Snyder – an internationally recognised authority on water contamination from the University of Arizona's Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering – and the university’s BIO5 Institute to work together to develop ways to detect emerging contaminants in water. Emerging contaminants can include pharmaceuticals, personal care products and other substances used in everyday life. The collaboration is expected to increase the ability of scientists to accurately detect contamination in water supplies in order to protect the environment and public health.

“The partnership with Agilent allows the University of Arizona to more effectively influence water reuse and desalination strategies by ensuring that the required water quality has been achieved for its intended use,” said Dr Snyder. “Not only will we investigate known potential threats to water quality, we will also bridge the gap between detection and health by developing methodologies that can screen water for toxicity from multiple compounds.” The concept of addressing contaminants in potable water as mixtures is of great interest to the regulatory, scientific and public communities.

“This collaboration will allow us to share applications developed by Dr. Snyder’s group in the area of water use and reuse with other researchers,” said Joe Weitzel, Global Environmental Manager, Agilent. “Agilent is committed to driving research that will ultimately benefit environmental and public health, and there is no better partner to achieve this goal than Dr Shane Snyder.” The collaboration with Agilent provides the university and BIO5 with unique analytical capabilities.

Using Agilent equipment, nearly any imaginable trace organic or inorganic contaminant can be detected and analysed, allowing for an ultra-comprehensive analysis of water, including the development of chemical signatures unique to a particular water source. This capability, added to the already renowned water research facilities at the university, will help bridge engineering and public health to improve water usage and quality. The collaboration will be centered at the BIO5 Institute on the University of Arizona campus, where the infrastructure for cross-cutting work combining biological and chemical research already exists.

Circle no. 414 ADVERTORIAL MultiLine® with IDS: A New Mobile WTW GmbH have announced its new MultiLine® handhelds Multi 3410 and Multi 3430 with intelligent digital IDS sensors. The raw signals are directly converted by the sensor

into digital signals which are insensitive against interference. The sensor logs on the meter with serial number and status information as calibration history and specifications. Base of the sensors are the proven field tested and enhanced WTW pH and ORP sensors of the SenTix®

family as well as conductivity cells of the TetraCon® and LR-series.

Further advantages include: the new transmission technology allows any cable length particularly for pH sensors; the cables are rugged but flexible and have a better handling in comparison to the conventional ones. Currently cable lengths up to 25m will be available. The new IDS optical DO probe FDO®

925 with quick responding bevelled

membrane and green light technology can be used in field and laboratory applications. Three new meters are available. The Multi 3410 is a one-channel multi meter for users who measure different parameters only sequentially. The Multi 3420 has the ability of simultaneous measuring, displaying and storing of up to two, the Multi 3430 up to three parameters. Galvanically isolated sensor inputs allow simultaneous multi parameter measurement in the same sample without interference.

All meters have the same housing and keypad features as the ProfiLine handhelds. They are water proof (IP 67) and easy to clean. A new brilliant high resolution colour graphic display works as modern interface between user and meter. Of course all functions can be controlled by plaintext menus. The sensors will be recognised automatically. A memory for 10000 records allows long data collections in the field. The data can be transferred via an integrated USB host interface directly on a USB-Stick or selected printers. An additionally integrated mini USB interface is for connecting the MultiLine®

for the water proof sensor connectors provides a safe connection between sensor and meter. Rechargeable batteries which can be charged directly in the meter provide an economical operation. A choice of useful combinations of meters and sensors give the best possible application support.

New Optical Field D.O. Sensor: FDO®

925

WTW proudly presents the optical field D.O. probe FDO®

family of intelligent digital sensors. The FDO®

new MultiLine® 925 belonging to the IDS

925 is designed for use with the digital portable instruments

and is suited for field as well as for laboratory use (diameter 0.6” / 15.3mm). With its extremely fast response (T99 < 60 s) and its bevelled membrane repelling air bubbles, it provides excellent signals for reliable measurements.

The new sensor relies on the technology of WTW’s proven on-line optical D.O. Sensor: Soft green light guarantees a long service life of the optical membrane.

The exchangeable membrane cap bears a chip with factory calibration data which are read out by the MultiLine®

.

In combination with the new digital MultiLine®

FDO® 925 will re-define mobile D.O. measurement.
