Spotlight Environmental Analysis & Electrochemistry New Method for Precise and Reliable Analysis of Oil
Thermo Fisher Scientific, Inc announced that it has developed a new precise and reliable method for elemental analysis of oil samples in the petrochemical industry. The innovative method uses the Thermo Scientific ARL PERFORM’X X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectrometer to create a flexible and high-performance solution that is capable of reaching detection limits of below 0.5 parts per million (ppm). Petrochemical regulations are becoming increasingly strict and are demanding lower levels of quantification for key elements such as sulphur, nickel, vanadium and lead in products. Compliance with various norms, including ASTM D2622, ASTM D4927 and ISO 20884, requires a method that can offer high sensitivity and stability to ensure content conforms to regulatory limits. The new Thermo Fisher method uses wavelength dispersive XRF (WDXRF), which is increasingly being used for analyses in the petroleum industry and has many advantages over traditional methods. This technique offers excellent repeatability and resolution, particularly for light elements such as sodium and calcium. In addition, it allows oils to be measured directly without dilution, which significantly reduces sample preparation time and increases speed and throughput of analyses. Designed for demanding laboratories, the ARL PERFORM’X system offers dual sample loading and is able to process more than 60 samples per hour, offering rapid and precise analysis of up to 84 elements including sulphur, nickel, vanadium and lead. The instrument provides the highest standards of safety with an innovative sample recognition capability that ensures safe and straightforward loading of liquids. With its helium shutter, the ARL PERFORM’X completely protects the goniometer from chemical attacks and thermo instability by separating the primary chamber for the spectral chamber. The system also offers unmatched stability and repeatability of results, making it ideally suited to solving complex composition problems in demanding industrial applications. The ARL PERFORM’X instrument features the latest version of the state-of-the-art Thermo Scientific OXSAS software, which is able to operate with Microsoft Windows®
separate display screen, enabling users to monitor the status of their analyses and improve productivity as a result of the software’s fast and accurate reporting capabilities. Ultrapure Water System Outperformance meets Cost Control
The demands placed on the production of ultrapure water (ASTM type 1) for laboratory applications are extremely high. Indeed, ultrapure water is the basis for innumerable analytical applications like atomic absorption, ion exchange chromatography and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). In such fields, it is more important than ever that users get ultrapure water quality they can trust at the press of a button. With its innovative design, arium®
pro for ASTM type 1 laboratory water sets another new benchmark. Not only does this
brand-new system feature convincing high quality, but it is equipped with innovative and mature technology throughout. The system’s integrated glass interface display with its intuitive, touch-function and the user friendly menu navigation makes this trend-setting arium®
series simple to operate. The menu guidance is straightforward, allowing the user to produce
laboratory-grade water easily. Functions like volume and time controlled dispensing, coupled with freely adjustable flow rates give users ultra-high flexibility in all their routine applications. All processes can be streamlined, controlled and executed efficiently. Users will also appreciate the additional options like an activatable PIN code for basic configurations along with a variety of new data logging features. All four models in the arium®
pro series are guarantors for dependable and optimal analytical results. For example, laboratory-grade water that is free of purification components have an ultra-high capacity that prolongs the maintenance intervals and lowers operating costs. Looking ahead, the arium®
RNase|DNase can be produced for biotechnology applications with a TOC < 1 ppb and endotoxins < 0.001 EU/ml. The systems can be installed as benchtop, wall-mounted or below-bench units to meet the user’s individual needs and fit the available space. Besides fast and easy handling, users will also benefit from the low after–sales costs associated with the new series. The pro series will soon be extended with a reverse osmosis system
and a new ASTM type 2 system. That’s just Sartorius Stedim Biotech setting yet another milestone in their new generation of ultrapure and laboratory-grade water systems. ADVERTORIAL Comprehensive GLP Support
Jenway has a comprehensive range of pH meters from basic portable pH meters to advanced laboratory meters; ideal for quality control and research grade applications. Model 3520 is an advanced pH/mV meter with comprehensive support for Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) and offers the full specification of a research grade pH meter. A novel function introduced on the model 3520 is a supervisor security code that can be used to lock all the Set Up menu selections. This ensures that in normal operation no changes can be made to the settings and no results can be deleted from its capacious 500 reading memory. All readings are stored with a date and time ‘stamp’ that cannot be changed.
A re-calibration reminder or alarm can be set and current calibration status is clearly displayed. To ensure full traceability of results both operator and sample identities can be entered. All data and settings are stored in the non-volatile memory and the full current status can be printed out via the RS232 serial output. Jenway have also introduced a cable-less infrared (IrDA) output on Model 3520 that can communicate directly with the optional printer.
