20 Compact High Efficiency Cold Trap and Freeze Dryer
Genevac has announced a new version of its miVac SpeedTrap™ frost-free cold trap that not only provides unmatched volatile solvent recovery but now also enables freeze drying of up to 250ml of aqueous samples. The new generation SpeedTrap™ is suitable for use with a wide range of solvents, from volatile organic solvents through to water and even higher boiling point solvents including 1,4-dioxane, tertiary butanol, and cyclohexane. While it is designed to complement the miVac series of concentrators it can also be used with other manufacturer's concentrators, provided that the solvents concentrated are compatible.
The SpeedTrap can be used with a high vacuum pump as a stand-alone small volume freeze dryer, or can be used with a concentrator to become a combined concentration and freeze drying system.
The new SpeedTrap is radically different. It is very small in size and requires little bench space, being only 212 mm (8.3 inches) wide. The SpeedTrap operates with the cold condenser coils suspended directly in the vapour path, so that solvent vapours condense directly on to the coils and run off into the collection vessel below. There are many benefits to this method including it is highly efficient, with more than twice the condensing power of similar cold trap systems; users can quickly see the solvents in the trap and emptying the trap is easy, requiring no defrosting. An automatic defrost mode ensures that the user does not need to spend time defrosting the system, even when using water. The collection vessel is removed with a simple quarter turn, allowing safe disposal of the solvents.

New Distributor of Cryopreserved Terminally Differentiated Human Hepatic Cells
Merck Millipore recently announced that the company will be the initial distributor of HepaRG(TM) human hepatic cells from Biopredic. HepaRG cells, derived from a hepatocellular carcinoma, are supplied as cryopreserved, terminally differentiated cells and express major liver specific functions including Cytochrome P450 enzymes and drug transporters. HepaRG cells provide a number of advantages over primary hepatocytes and liver slices for characterisation of the uptake, metabolism, and disposition of drug candidates, drug discovery, and high throughput screening. The supply of primary cells and tissue can be unpredictable and other transformed lines such as HepG2 have not gained widespread use due to loss of specific liver functions such as Cytochrome P450, thus impacting the proper assessment of toxicity.
“With more than 900 drugs having been implicated in causing liver injury and toxicity, there is a need for more accurate prediction of hepatic cytotoxicity and genotoxicity in humans,” noted Umesh A. Patel, PhD, Director, Lead Discovery. “While in vitro human liver preparations offer the most pertinent models, availability and inter-donor variability are significant drawbacks. In contrast, HepaRG(TM) cells reproducibly express the activities drug metabolising enzymes and transporters to facilitate ADME/tox studies.”

Stuart’s new SC6+ Colony Counter adds PC and printer connectivity, as well as LED lighting for greater comfort in longer work sessions. Replacing the popular SC6 model and offering excellent new capabilities at no additional cost, the SC6+ is ideal for all microbiology applications, particularly in the food industry. With the latest colony counter Stuart introduces LED lighting. The light is whiter and brighter, making observation easier. The SC6+ is simple to operate, enabling fast, accurate counting of bacterial and mould colonies. Touching a petri dish on the electronic pressure pad with a felt tip pen or probe to mark a colony causes a count to register on the digital display, with an optional tone for confirmation. The black background facility helps when counting difficult, translucent colonies.
Commenting on the new connectivity provided by the SC6+, Jackie Taylor, Stuart Product Manager, said, “The ability to connect the unit to a PC means that data can be transferred directly, eliminating any user errors which may arise when manually recording
and keying in results. Output can be imported straight into an Excel file, saving additional time. The SMP30/1 accessory printer can also be connected to the colony counter, and results from numerous plates printed out at the touch of a button. As the colony counter has inbuilt statistical functionality, mean and standard deviations can be included in the results printout.” The SC6+ colony counter is supplied complete with one Wolffhuegel graticule, one segmentation disc and two centering adapters for 50 to 90mm petri dishes. A choice of magnifiers is available to aid easier counting of smaller colonies and the receiver dish may be easily removed for cleaning.
Circle no. 375 The stylish new Stuart® Undergrad Hotplate Stirrers
are designed to enhance ease of use and safety in the laboratory. They incorporate unique features, such as a power-independent hot warning light and an LED indicator of the hotplate surface temperature, which help create a safer working environment.

“Hot” warning light will flash whenever the plate temperature is above 50°C even when the hotplate is turned off and unplugged from the mains. Powerful magnets and motor give stirring speeds up to 2000rpm and are capable of mixing large volumes (up to 15 litres). A choice of ceramic or coated metal tops are available.
The Undergrad range from Stuart includes combination hotplate stirrer models as well as dedicated hotplates and stirrers. All the heating models are compatible with the Stuart SCT1 temperature controller and automatically detect when the controller is plugged in.
An LED temperature indicator surrounding the heater control knob on the Undergrad hotplates illuminates progressively to indicate the actual surface temperature. This provides a conspicuous visual indication that the unit is hot and also clearly differentiates the heat and stir controls. In addition, a ‘hot’ warning light flashes once the hotplate surface reaches 50ºC and continues to do so while the unit is hot, even if the unit is switched off and unplugged.
Jackie Taylor, Stuart Product Manager, commented: “The LED temperature indicator and power- independent hot warning light are unique to Stuart hotplates, demonstrating our commitment to ensuring greater safety in the laboratory. Safety has also been enhanced by designing the hotplates and stirrers so that any spills are directed away from the user controls. BioCote®
