12 New Phase Added to Shell HPLC/UHPLC Column Line
Phenomenex, Inc announced the addition of a Phenyl-Hexyl phase to its successful Kinetex core-shell HPLC/UHPLC column family. Kinetex Phenyl-Hexyl offers a unique selectivity for the separation of compounds that are difficult to resolve using traditional phenyl phases. The new Phenyl-Hexyl columns complement the existing Kinetex phases and are especially effective for resolving aromatic hydrocarbons such as tricyclic antidepressants and explosives. Like C18, Phenyl-Hexyl is ideal for a wide range of applications, including the resolution of moderate hydrophobic compounds.
The Kinetex Phenyl-Hexyl is offered in 2.6- and 1.7-micron particle sizes. “The addition of a Phenyl-Hexyl phase to the Kinetex core-shell line of HPLC/UHPLC columns gives chromatographers one of the most useful selectivities on one of the most advanced LC technologies,” explained Jeremy Bierman, Brand Manager for Phenomenex.
With complementary C18 and Phenyl phases, users can screen for optimal resolution of complex sample mixtures. Bierman added: “With the addition of this unique selectivity to our successful portfolio of reversed phase chemistries on core-shell HPLC and UHPLC media, we now address the vast majority of separation needs in the industry.”
Kinetex core-shell technology meets researchers’ need to improve results and increase productivity without large capital expenditures. The new Phenyl-Hexyl offering brings the total number of Kinetex phases to six, and the company plans to continue expanding the choices.

Sub-2-Micron UHPLC Column for Reversed- Phase Protein Characterisation
Agilent Technologies, Inc has introduced its ZORBAX Rapid Resolution High Definition 300SB-C8, 1.8 µm columns for liquid chromatography. The new 1.8µm particles expand Agilent’s range of wide-pore, 300Å columns for better recovery, resolution and scalability in protein analysis.
These RRHD columns are used in ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC) to analyse the primary structure of proteins, to confirm protein identity, to quantify post-translational modifications, and to provide impurity profiles for biotherapeutic protein discovery and production.
“Faster and higher performance UHPLC protein separations are now available, with added resolution from a reversed- phase column with sub-2-µm particles,” said Phil Stremple, Agilent Chemistries Marketing Manager. “This new ZORBAX column, with C8 functionality, is the second of a series of wide-pore RRHD columns for protein applications.”
High-Quality Competitive Price HPLC Solvents
Founded in 1971 in California, Spectrum Chemical Mfg. Corporation manufactures and distributes 15,000 fine chemicals and over 120,000 lab equipments and supplies. In 2011 they set up a new facility, Spectrum China Ltd, to provide more convenient services to customers in Asia Pacific area. One of their widely used product lines is HPLC solvents, which exceed ACS specification; have low water content, low evaporation residue, and low UV background; are suitable for gradient testing; are submicron filtered; and offer lot-to-lot consistency for reliable results.
Spectrum China also provide HPLC testing related chemicals such as ion-pair reagents, pH buffers and pestisolve grade solvents with detailed COA. High quality, remarkable services and competitive price is what they promise to their customers.

Researchers Respond Enthusiastically to Chromatrap Technology
Porvair Filtration Group reports that considerable interest was shown in their novel Chromatrap chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP) assay technology recently showcased at the Epigenetics Europe congress in Munich and the Epigenomics of Common Diseases conference held at the Wellcome Trust Conference Centre in Cambridge, UK.
The Porvair Chromatrap spin column approach offers significant advantages compared to methods based on sepharose or magnetic beads, which involve many steps of separation, pipetting and re- suspension. Independent tests with Chromatrap demonstrate levels of DNA pull down up to 25 times higher than with traditional bead based procedures, excellent DNA enrichment with signal-to-noise ratios typically 2 to 3 times better than competing procedures and top
performance even with samples with as few as 15,000 cells per assay.
Kevin Quinlan, Business Development Manager for the Chromatrap technology, commented: "Early adopters of ChromaTrap have been delighted at the increased efficiency and precision they can routinely achieve compared to traditional bead-based ChIP technologies." He added: "Many of the pharmaceutical, healthcare and academic researchers we met at the recent congresses highlighted the need for a simpler technology to alleviate problems experienced with current ChIP assays and consequently have committed to evaluate Chromatrap technology."

New System Integrates ELSD into CombiFlash® Chromatography Systems
Rf
The 1.8µm particle size and 300Å pore size brings UHPLC efficiency, resolution and robust quantitation to reversed- phase protein separations. Additionally, the columns are stable up to 1,200 bar. Agilent’s proven StableBond technology delivers symmetrical peaks even at low pH when using trifluoroacetic or formic acid mobile-phase modifiers, without compromising column life. Baselines are steady with UV and MS detection. The new columns are available in lengths of 50mm and 100mm to meet the needs of analysts for speed or resolution.

By integrating ELSD functionality, the overall footprint of the system is greatly reduced when compared to the use of an external detector. As a result, chemists are able to reduce required bench space by 30% or more.
The performance of the integrated system is equivalent to the performance achieved by using a standard CombiFlash Rf 200 system with an external 340CF ELSD detector. All operating parameters of the integrated ELSD are handled using Teledyne Isco’s powerful PeakTrak®
software.
Teledyne Isco ELSDs use patented Thermo-Split™ technology to precisely control the spray chamber and drift tube temperatures, thereby optimising detector sensitivity over a wide range of flow rates and gradients. By accurately controlling the nebulisation zone temperature, the mobile phase-to-analyte ratio can be closely regulated. A flexible signal filter option reduces baseline noise, without affecting resultant peaks.
