Leading the Way in Supplying Monitoring Systems to the UK’s Major Utility Companies
Specialist electrochemical sensor manufacturer Analytical Technology, Inc announced that it has been awarded the framework agreement to supply and install triple validated chlorine monitoring systems to Thames Water. The new chlorine monitoring systems will replace Thames’ existing instrumentation, improving process control and enabling considerable operational and maintenance savings in line with current company strategy. The new framework agreement reinforces Analytical Technology’s position as a
leading provider of water monitoring instrumentation to many of the UK’s largest utility companies.
Following a lengthy and detailed decision-making process, Analytical Technology was awarded the framework agreement by Thames Water in February 2011, beating off competition from six of the world’s leading providers. The company scored significantly higher than its competitors in all three characteristics on which the award was based, achieving scores 20% higher than all other companies in areas including commercial, technical and term and conditions of trade (T&C). Thames Water currently has the UK’s largest installed base of chlorine monitors and is investing in the new technology during AMP 5, the asset management plan period between 2010 and 2015. Due to the large size of the order, the new framework agreement was jointly awarded to both Analytical Technology and Siemens.
Analytical Technology launched its UK and Europe business in 1998 and the company has enjoyed growing success, now providing compliant instrumentation to most UK water providers and leading the way in developing reliable and cost-effective monitoring systems. Developing and producing the highest quality instruments available, Analytical Technology recently added the Profibus DP standard to its monitoring systems, enabling water and wastewater treatment plants to optimise maintenance and achieve a high level of confidence in chlorine measurement. The triple validated chlorine monitoring systems selected by Thames Water will enable them to improve process control and make great savings over the whole life of the asset.

Detecting Biodiesel Traces in Aviation Turbine Fuel with Unique GC Application
PAC announces the introduction of the AC Analytical Controls FAME in AVTUR analyser designed to detect traces of Fatty-acid Methyl Esters or FAMEs, more widely known as biodiesel, in aviation turbine fuel. FAMEs are used as blending stock for diesel fuel in refinery applications, and there is concern that other products, using the same production, storage, and transport systems such as aviation turbine fuel can become cross-contaminated with FAME and create problems with jet engine performance.
PAC’s FAME in AVTUR analyser is a Gas Chromatography application with a unique combination of deans-switching and re-focusing. It can be used by the average technician and doesn’t require a chemist to operate. It is specifically designed to be used for routine analysis by refineries, distribution/pipeline companies, independent labs, airline companies, military, and others.
With the AC FAME in AVTUR solution, no sample preparation is required, and the application meets DEFSTAN 91-91 Jet Fuel Specification. The analyser can be used with a wide range of jet fuels. Alternative methods require the operator to prepare the sample, such as accurately weighing the sample with internal standard, dilute the sample, or use Solid Phase Extraction techniques. No Internal standard (ISTD), no dilutions, and no Solid Phase Extractions techniques are used. This makes the analyser much easier to use, suitable for use by operators with minimal chemical background or laboratory skills. The excellent stability and repeatability of the instrument minimises calibration and maintenance of the instrument, while still achieving the sensitivity to measure the trace levels of FAME in jet fuel at sub-ppm levels.

Our latest digital handheld, the Ultrameter III 9P, is based on the tried and tested design of the Ultrameter II. The 9P adds the ability to perform in-cell alkalinity and hardness titrations either as stand-alone measurements or as part of an LSI calculation. Alkalinity, hardness, pH and temperature values can be manipulated in the LSI calculator to predict the effect of changes on water balance. Measurements are extremely accurate. And the 9P is simple to operate and maintain.
The 9P is packaged with all required solutions and accessories as part of the 9PTK Titration Kit. A hard foam-lined carry case organises and protects all contents: The 9P; 9P cell extender; titration plunger; reagents for in-cell alkalinity, hardness and LSI titrations; standard calibration solutions for all parameters; storage solution to protect the pH/ORP sensor; and pipette for precision dispensing with additional tips. Sensors are internal and included.
