Foreword
Welcome to Volume 2, Issue 3 ofChromatography Today. This is in fact the seventh issue sincewe started and also the seventh I have had the pleasure of introducing. It is also the last Iwill be introducing, having completedmy termof office as President of TheChromatographic Society in July this year. When taking up the position of President there were a few key aims and objectives that had to be addressed. Just one of these was to do more on the communications side of our efforts to do everything we can do support the development of separation sciences. However the opportunity to develop an association with Chromatography Today, while not coming completely out of the blue, was a pleasant surprise, evolving as it did from our regular contributions to International Labmate. Chromatography Today has been an important newinitiative for theChromatographic Society over the past two years. We hope that this will continue for a long time to come.
It is gratifying that the theme for this issue is chiral separations, a field in which I have been involved off-and-on for over thirty years now, dating back to times when resolving enantiomers was a seriously difficult challenge. As would be expected, we present to you all the latest developments in the field. These focus on the latest developments in chiral method development strategies, ranging
from the use of chiral stationary phases (CSP) based on 3-µm particles to the use of multiple capillaries in parallel. The article by Norbert Maier covers ion exchange CSP, one of the few genuinely new clasess of CSP since the late 80’s, and continues our recurring focus on the Society’s medalists in essence serving as a tribute to 2009 Martin Gold Medallist,Wolfgang Lindner. For something a bit different, the article by CharlotteWeekes is to be commended. Not only is chiral separations important now, the chiral separations that were taking place in the 1980’s are still important now! As usual we are brimming over with content and have managed to include content that has had to be held over from previous issues plus reports from important meetings from early summer
i.e.the Societies Spring Symposium on ‘Hypenated Techniques' and HPLC2009 (where medal presentations took place). Don’t be surprised if you find some chiral content in the next issue of Chromatography Today. This will have a preparative chromatography theme and will include a report on the “Big Prep 5” meeting which is taking place at GSK, Stevenage on September 17th and 18th.
With this being my last Chromatography Today Foreword on behalf of the Chromatographic Society I would like to take the liberty of finishing off by saying a bit more about the Society. First of all I will be continuing as a member of the Executive Committee of the
John Lough - President of the Chromatographic Society
Alan Handley
Society for the next year and as such I look forward to continuing as a Contributing Editor for Chromatography Today. I look forward to having more time to concentrate on pedantry such as chiding contributors for the use of first person rather than third person or active voice when it should be passive voice! The Society is now continuing to move on under new President, Alan Handley. Promotional
material is being prepared on the many benefits of being a member of the Society. We look forward to you joining us soon if you are not already a member (e-mail
chromsoc@meetingmakers.co.uk or go online at
www.chromsoc.com for a membership application form). Under Alan the Society will be continuing to explore other ways by which we can help promote the development of separation science (e.g. the John Dolphin Fellowships). However, one- and two-day symposia will continue to be our mainstay. Look out for Alan’s own GC meeting at Runcorn in early November. This will be followed in 2010 by meetings at AstraZeneca, Alderley Edge in March and Merck, Sharp and Dohme, Hoddesdon in May. Of course, the Society is also one of the main organizations behind the International Symposium in Chromatography series. ISC2010 will take place in Valencia in September, 2010.
