New automated solid phase extraction instrument


The new AutoTrace 280 system from Dionex (USA) is an automated solid phase extraction (SPE) instrument designed to be used with large volume (20 mL - 4 L) samples for the isolation of trace organics in water or aqueous matrices.


The instrument traps compounds of interest on SPE adsorbents (in cartridge or disk format) and then elutes them with strong solvents to generate an analysis-ready extract thus saving time, solvent, and labor, and ensuring high reproducibility for analytical laboratories. The instrument can process up to 6 samples in 2-3 h with only 15 min of operator involvement. Powerful pumps (no check valves) and a proven, positive-pressure technology efficiently process even the most difficult samples.


The AutoTrace 280 instrument features a new multiple port- switching valve, improved electronics, and a USB port for connecting to a PC. Up to 24 methods can be stored in the instrument and each method can be uploaded from the front panel using the software which includes a new feature for method editing.

NEWEconomical Post Column Derivatization Kits


Aura Industries (USA) has introduced its NEW EPOCOD™, a compact and economical unit placed between an HPLC Column


and Detector. The EPOCOD™is designed to facilitate post column chemical derivatization. The kit includes a PTFE knitted reactor coil, a column jacket for temperature control and a “T” connector for convenient mixing of the analyte with post column chemical derivatization agents. The Standard EPOCOD™comes with a knitted reactor coil 5 meters long x 0.5 mm ID in a 4” long column jacket (EP B-4-5-50). Other combinations of knitted reactor coils and column jackets can be provided based on the users specific analytical needs. Shimadzu Scientific Instruments’ new Multi-Dimensional Gas Chromatography system (MDGC) expands the capabilities of chemists who perform target compound analyses in complex sample matrices, including natural product extracts, food and flavor components, and biological extracts.


Traditionally, a single-column approach to these analyses has proven to be problematic because the complex nature of the matrices makes the separation of the target analytes from matrix interference extremely difficult. This new multidimensional heart-cutting system, incorporating a “multi-Deans switch,” greatly increases separation power by combining two capillary columns of different selectivity for a more efficient separation of the target analytes from a complex sample matrix. The improved separation of the analytes from the matrix interferences allows more positive identification and improved quantitative analysis of the target analytes.


The key hardware component of the MDGC system is a capillary- optimized pressure switching device (“multi-Deans switch”) that directs flow from the first column directly to a monitor detector or to the second column and detector. This device has no moving parts, but is based on the use of an advanced electronic flow controller to balance the pressure on both sides of the transfer line between columns. Multiple heart-cuts can be made from the first column without shifting the retention times of compounds eluting after the cuts, greatly simplifying method development.

New precolumn filters


Now available in the UK from Anachem Ltd., Isolation Technologies’ new ColumnSaver£ precolumn filters offer all the protection of conventional precolumn filters at one-third the cost. With its convenient direct connect design, change-over time is measured in seconds and no tools or wrenches are needed. The ColumnSaver can also be used as a convenient, fingertight inline filter when used with a 1/16” union.


The ColumnSaver PEEK body contains a HiFlo£ filter element and is designed for maximum filtration of particulate matter with minimal dead volume or backpressure. As soon as an increase in backpressure is detected, simply remove and dispose of the ColumnSaver unit and replace it with a new one. The direct-connect design is compatible with all 1/16” 10-32 internal fitting ports from all column manufacturers.
