Unit 2 New words

symbol: a sign or picture that is used in the place of an object

key: a list of symbols with their meanings

Symbols and keys

What are symbols and keys? Symbols

Road Railway

Church Building Post Office Police Station Hospital School

Electricity ploes and cables River

A symbol is a simple picture or letter that we use in the place of an object. For example, on a map the symbol for a post office is P and the symbol for a hospital is H. In Activity 1 you may have seen that some objects are quite difficult to draw in plan view! This is why we use symbols on plans and maps. We usually use the word ‘plan’ for plan drawings of small areas. We use the word ‘map’ for plan drawings of bigger areas, such as towns and countries. Maps use symbols. Because symbols are small, we can show lots of things on a map of a big area.

Keys

A key is a list of symbols with their meanings. Here is a key to some of the symbols used on South African maps. Symbols and a key on a map

Here is a map of the farm on page 39. On this map we use symbols. You will see that there is a key next to the map. Compare the symbols on the map with the plan drawing at the bottom of the previous page.
