Looking at the world on a map
Let’s imagine this orange is our globe. If we cut the skin off this orange in one piece and spread it out so that the skin lies flat, the orange skin will be this shape:
Now if we could cut the skin off the globe we would have a flat map like this:
Europe
North America
ATLANTIC OCEAN
PACIFIC OCEAN
South America
ATLANTIC OCEAN
Asia
PACIFIC OCEAN
Africa
INDIAN OCEAN
Australia SOUTHERN OCEAN Antarctica
We cannot carry a globe around very easily. But we can carry a sheet of paper. A map can be drawn on a sheet of paper or in a book. But how do we transfer the information on the globe to a flat sheet of paper?
