Unit 3 Grid references What is a map grid?
We make a grid when we divide a picture or a map into squares. Each square has a letter and a number that we use to find places in that square. This makes it easier to find places on a map of a big area.
Look at the map of the farm. It is the same map as on page 39, but this time it is drawn with a grid.
A 1 B C D Key
path house
dam 2 3 4
windpump tree cow road bakkie
Can you use the grid to find the cows? Follow these steps to use the grid: • Place your index finger of your left hand on Row 2. • Place your index finger of your right hand on Column B. • Slide your right index finger downward along Column B and your left index finger right along Row 2. Your two fingers will meet at B2.
So we say the grid reference of the cows on this map is B2. We always put the letter first and then the number. What can you see at grid reference B1? Look at the row of letters at the top of the picture and find B. Trace your finger down Column B until you come to Row 1 across. In square B1 you will see trees and a road.
