Ordering and comparing up to 4-digit whole numbers Learners should be able to use Mental Mathematics to: • compare two 4-digit whole numbers by first comparing their thousands, then hundreds, then tens and then units
• order two whole numbers in ascending order (from the smallest to the largest) or descending order (from the largest to the smallest)
• use the comparative symbols ‘<’ (is less than), ‘=’ (is equal to) and ‘>’ (is bigger than) to write down the result of such comparisons.
Place value of up to 4-digit whole numbers Learners should be able to use Mental Mathematics to: • break down any 4-digit whole number into thousands, hundreds, tens and units • build up any 4-digit whole number from a given number of thousands, hundreds, tens and units
Odd and even numbers
Learners should be able to use Mental Mathematics to: • identify even numbers as those ending on 0, 2, 4, 6 or 8 • identify odd numbers as those ending on 1, 3, 5, 7 or 9.
Multiples
Learners should be able to use Mental Mathematics to find all multiples of 1-digit whole numbers up to 100.
