Measurement
y Select and use appropriate units, instruments and formulae
y Make sensible estimates
y Be aware of
sensibleness and reasonableness of measurement and results
y Variety of measurement activities
y Accurate measure y The standard SI units y Appropriate measuring instruments
y Estimate and verify results
y Select and convert between units
y Informally measure angles, area, perimeter, capacity and volume
y Historical development of measurement
y Context for fractions and decimal fractions
Data Handling
y Asking questions and finding answers in order to describe events and the environment
y Collect, analyse, interpret and report data
y Make informed predictions
y Describe
randomness and uncertainty
y Know that different situations have different probabilities of occurring; many situations have a limited number of possible outcomes
y Move from collecting to reporting on data
y Different contexts for data
y Range of questions y Analyse data critically in terms who, how, when and where it is collected
y Probability – focus on performing repeated events, and list, count and predict outcomes
Keep learners aware of the data cycle at all times during data handling. Learners must think of data handling as a process and not isolated activities. When doing each activity have learners identify which part of the data cycle the activity would fall.
Include practical applications of measurement wherever possible. Have learners physically measure and compare quantities. Revise SI units and have these available on a poster in the class for constant reference. Include measurement as a means of introducing and decimals and making decimals more accessible to learners.
