Sample lesson plan Grade 5

Some may find daily lesson plans useful, although these are not a formal policy requirement. An example of how to complete a lesson plan is below.

Date: xx/xx/xx Term: 1

Content/concept: Whole numbers Activity 1: Links with previous activity: n/a

Links with next activity: Learners use their knowledge and understanding of place value when they add and subtract 5-digit numbers in Unit 3

Teaching plan y Mental maths

Count forwards and backwards between 0 and 1 000 in a variety of intervals specified in the Learner’s Book on age 10. y Check prior knowledge:

Class activities involve reading aloud 3-digit and 4-digit numbers from the board to determine the level of the class. y Teaching procedures (methods you will use): Group work and concrete manipulation: Learners use the variety of apparatus to produce 4-digit and 5-digit numbers. Each learner should get a chance to represent numbers on each of the apparatus. Instructional: Revise the essentials of place value as a class or in small groups if possible. Revise the meaning of each digit. Do examples together as a class identifying the value of each digit. Learners work with place value cards and make up 4-digit numbers.

Ask individual learners the meanings of various digits in the numbers. Revise the concepts of ascending and descending, bigger than and smaller than. Written work: Learners complete the activities listed in the Learner’s Book. y Differentiation (how you will deal with extension/remedial tasks): Remedial: Work in smaller groups or even one on one with learners who are struggling with either the concrete apparatus or the written work. Start with 3-digit numbers and work up to the prescribed 4–digit level. Extension: Provide more challenging examples to learners who are coping easily. Include numbers towards the top of the number range and more complicated to compare and order. y Progress checks:

Observation: Observe learners as they complete the concrete tasks. Record if certain learners are struggling. Learner’s Book activities: Check the learners’ answers.

Assessment: teacher, peer

Confidential information/Teacher reflection: Most learners were able to count and accurately represent numbers on an abacus and using place value cards. The following learners may require additional remediation of place value: Simon, Peter and Thembi.
