Hawks Green Depot site is underway
Work is now well underway to build new homes on land at Cannock Chase Council’s Hawks Green Depot site on Old Hednesford Road. The housing development scheme is the
result of a successful partnership between the council and Cannock-based Jessup Brothers. The development will transform part of
the depot into a mixed tenure housing estate. It is the first scheme to be built with money from the council’s £12.9m Housing Investment Fund. The scheme is due for completion by March
2022 and will provide a total of 44 homes, of which 22 will be for open market sale and the rest will be council homes for rent. Councillor John Kraujalis, portfolio leader
for housing, said: “We are delighted to see the early progress of works on site for what is the first scheme to be built under the Housing Investment Fund. “The development will transform this
under-used piece of Council-owned land, and I hope the future residents of this lovely development will enjoy their new homes.” The development was also part funded by
a £900,000 contribution the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) Brownfield Land and Property Development Fund. West Midlands Andy Street said:
“Throughout the crisis, the WMCA has used its funding to not only unlock urban sites like this one for new homes, while protecting our green belt, but to also give local people the skills they need to work in the industries of the future such as construction and digital. “So, it’s good to see how that investment
is now breathing new life into the Hawks Green Depot site.”

President vows to boost education ties
Newly installed Cannock Chase Chamber president Gill Durkin has vowed to continue with her predecessor’s campaign to boost ties between business and education. Ms Durkin, a director of local training provider
Performance Through People, said education and skills is ‘at the heart of everything we do’. She was speaking during the Chamber’s
annual general meeting, having taken over from Martyn Jupp of Plant and Safety, who has served as president for the past three years. She said: “In his term as president, Martyn has
worked enthusiastically to bring together education and business, ensuring our young people are ready for the world of work. “I look forward to continuing this work and
helping businesses have access to the many opportunities available to them to upskill and maintain a highly effective workforce.” Ms Durkin, who has been involved with local Chambers of Commerce since the early 1990s, said that despite the Covid crisis, which has dominated life this year, 2021 was likely to be a much better one for local businesses. She said: “Despite this difficult time early 2021
is looking to be an exciting time for us with the opening of the Designer Outlet village securing many jobs for local residents and attracting visitors to the area. “In February we will be working with our
media partner, Express & Star, who will be introducing a business supplement providing PR and advertising opportunities.” Outgoing president Mr Jupp will be continuing
at the Chamber as vice-president, joining Chris Wheeler of Auditel and David Mitchell of The Marketing People. He told the AGM – a ‘virtual’ event held last month – that while he believed

the Chamber had made great strides during his tenure, including opening a new office in Cannock, the Covid pandemic had proved a challenging time. He said: “Clearly I can't not mention the ‘C’
word, and the absolute devastation this is causing to our economy, our way of life and to our member’s businesses and many millions of people. I do, however, know that the business community is a hardy bunch and we will bounce back.” The AGM concluded with the addition of three
new council members, Amiee Thomas of Else Solicitors, Sheila Brown of Newlife Charity, and Alison Butler, Express & Star.
Cannock sites awarded Green Flag status
A number of sites in Cannock have been granted prestigious ‘Green Flag’ status. They are Cannock Park, Hednesford Park,
Ravenhill Park, Elmore Park, Stile Cop Cemetery and Castle Ring. The awards have been made by
environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy, in order to recognise and reward well-managed parks and green spaces across the United Kingdom. Local Chase councillor Christine Mitchell said:
“Parks, open spaces and cemeteries have been opened and staffed since the lockdown began, as the government quite rightly indicated the importance of parks to people’s health and well- being. “Our parks, cemeteries and play areas have had a levelling effect as they are open to all and

now hopefully hold a special place for people in the midst of a pandemic.” Keep Britain Tidy chief executive Allison
Ogden-Newton said: “This year, more than ever, our parks and green spaces have been a lifeline and we know that millions of people have used them to relax, meet friends, exercise or simply escape for a short time. “It is testament to the incredible dedication
and hard work of parks staff and volunteers that, despite the challenges that went along with record numbers of visitors, Cannock Chase Council has achieved the highest international standards for Cannock Park, Hednesford Park, Ravenhill Park, Elmore Park, Stile Cop Cemetery and Castle Ring demanded by the Green Flag Award.”
