IN THE SPOTLIGHT: RECRUITMENT & HR

TOP TIPS FOR PERFORMING IN AN INTERVIEW

Julie Warner (pictured), founder and director of Warner Recruitment, has been working in the recruitment industry for the past 15 years, personally interviewing thousands of candidates in that time. As well as her own interviews, Julie has also been privy to the very honest feedback employers have given on applicants. Here are some of her top tips for success.

1. Don’t fall at the first hurdle, do the basics right! Arrive in plenty of time for your interview and do a trial run if you can. Wear a suit/the smartest outfit you have.

2. The interviewer is not your friend – no matter how nice they are!

3. You are being interviewed by EVERYONE on site. You might be passing the MD in the carpark or even bump into your interviewer in the toilets! Make sure you are giving the image you want from the moment you arrive until the moment you leave.

4. Video interviews: the new norm! CHECK YOUR BACKGROUND! I have seen everything from half- empty bottles of spirts to washing lines, clothes all over the floor to people sat in bed during an interview! Check what your interviewer can see before you enter the virtual meeting room.

5. Video Interviews: Part 2. Tell everyone you live with you are having an interview and please leave you alone until you’re finished.

6. The one-page CV myth is a myth! I want to see all the jobs you have done, relevant to your job search or not; it shows your commitment to working, that you are able to get up and out of the house and are used to working and having a boss.

7. Give specific examples – think facts and figures e.g. “I investigated suppliers and sourced an alternative product which saved the business £10,000 per year.”

8. Don’t assume the interviewer knows your job and what you do.

9. Tell me what you CAN do, do not focus on what you cannot do!

I hope some of these tips help you to get your dream job, good luck!
