IN THE SPOTLIGHT: RECRUITMENT & HR CHARITY CHANNEL SWIM COMPLETED
Ashley Ball (pictured), co- founder of Addington Ball Recruitment, the finance and accountancy recruitment specialist , successfully completed a Channel Relay Swim in September to fundraise for the charity Aspire who support people with spinal injury. Every four hours someone in
the UK is paralysed by spinal cord injury. It can happen to anyone at any time and the effects are life changing. Aspire exist because there is currently no cure and they help those affected to live independent and fulfilled lives. Ashley was part of a team of
five, each swimming for an hour at a time, who completed the 22 mile crossing from England to France in 15 hours exactly. Ashley volunteered for the first leg,
setting off from a beach near Dover at 1:22am, in the darkness! Conditions on the day were as extreme as is allowed with the team having to contend with
CAREER COACHING IF YOU’VE BEEN MADE REDUNDANT
Going back out into the job market can be a daunting time, even more so during a pandemic. Jo Thurman, of Personal Career Management, has seen a marked increase in interest in the firm’s outplacement services since the onset of lockdown – outplacement being the support that companies can enlist to ensure staff who are facing redundancy can ‘leave well’.
Career coaching supports individuals through the process of redundancy; whether they decide to explore career options and be clear and focused about what’s next, or need support in the job search process, working with a career coach on a career management programme can help. Although never an experience to relish, redundancy has felt especially
poignant during 2020, as for many businesses, it wasn’t something they thought they would be considering. Offering outplacement for 16 years, Personal Career Management has seen a spike in firms taking up these services in the wake of the Covid-19 crisis. Jo and the team at Personal Career Management offer advice to anyone
facing redundancy: “If you have been made redundant and your company are offering you a redundancy package as part of your settlement agreement, you may be able to include career coaching costs in your final
severance. By including career coaching services in your settlement agreement, also known as outplacement, you will also make tax savings at the value of these services. This does not come off your £30,000 allowance when part of a settlement agreement. So including outplacement services now, rather than after a few months trying it alone, can save you thousands.”
THE TEAM ALSO SUGGEST THE FOLLOWING TIPS IN MOVING FORWARDS: 1. Get a well-written CV, targeted at the jobs you are applying for to ensure it gets noticed.
2. Learn how to make the most of social media and how it can benefit your job search.
3. Get practical interview training to increase confidence and help tackle those difficult interview questions.

rough seas, sea sickness, jellyfish and all without the comfort of a wetsuit as this is a key stipulation. The swim was officially invigilated by the Channel Swimming & Piloting Federation. Ashley described the experience
as one of the toughest but most exhilarating and rewarding of his life. Support, especially on the day, was inspiring and together they managed to raise close to £15,000. In this especially challenging year, this will help to make a huge and real difference to the amazing work that Aspire do. Now fully recovered and back
