But faced with the global health crisis of Covid-19, staff have gone above and beyond expectations to ensure their residents have remained safe, healthy, and well cared for throughout these challenging times. Before the nationwide lockdown was imposed, The Porterbrook made the decision to close the care home to non-essential visits in early March. All 39 staff members were on the ball and well-prepared, working responsibly as a team with good communication, clear guidance, regular updates and fully stocked PPE. They have also increased their regular housekeeping to twice daily, ensuring all surfaces are cleaned thoroughly. At The Porterbrook, they are known for their extensive and varied activities programme which residents love most about their experience. Whilst things have altered slightly, staff have thought outside the box to boost morale and reduce anxiety. Many of their residents have dementia or Alzheimer’s, so it has been vital for preserving cognitive function that they’ve had mental stimulation and remained in
contact with loved ones during the lockdown period. The Porterbrook has a large interactive touchscreen table that enables residents to play games, quizzes and sensory apps. They also have some smaller tablets which have been used to videocall family and friends.
While external entertainers haven’t been allowed inside the care home, that hasn’t stopped the fun from happening. Residents have had regular sing-alongs from the mezzanine balcony watching performers in the car park below, which has been an uplifting treat for everyone and something they hope to continue while ever the weather allows. For all of this and more, staff have received merited feedback and praise from residents’ relatives who have admired and appreciated their selfless dedication throughout strained and difficult circumstances. Looking ahead, they are still accepting applications from interested parties, with staff now making garden visits for the initial introduction and assessment, providing a virtual video tour of the home, and ensuring all prospective residents have a negative covid test before they move into their new home.
