Make your own Glowing Firefly Jar


Recreate the magic of catching fireflies in a jar with this fluorescent family-friendly craft that can be used to light-up a child’s bedroom or your garden.


YOU WILL NEED A clean jam jar String Moss


Fimo clay - black and fluorescent Acetate Glitter


Strong glue or glue gun Tweezers


METHOD Tip: When using any coloured clay it is best to start with the lightest colour first. Roll a small amount of fluorescent clay into a ball then taper at one end to make a cone shape. This will be the firefly’s bottom which will light up. Repeat another four times.


Now take the black clay and roll a ball for the body and a smaller ball for the head. You will need five of each.


Making sure your hands are clean, start to assemble your fireflies. First, press the flat side of the fluorescent clay onto the body then attach the head.


Bake on a tray in the oven at 110 degrees for ten minutes. Make sure you remove after this time and do


not leave to cool in the oven. Cut two C5 strips of acetate 4cm wide and fold in half horizontally. Cut five ovals for wings being careful not to cut the fold. Open out and glitter. Attach these to the upper part of each body using strong glue.


Cut two thin strips of acetate 6.5cm long and bend at the top and bottom at 1.5cm. Glue a firefly to one end on both strips. Using strong glue or a glue gun, carefully attach the string to the lid of the jar and edge.


Glue one of your acetate flies to the bottom of your jar in the centre and one off-centre to the inside of your lid. Use tweezers to place moss in the bottom, making sure your fly can be seen above the moss.


Add your other fireflies around


the edge of the jar on top of the moss.


Attach either wire or string at the top to make a loop to hang your jar. Screw on the lid and place


in a window to absorb the light then watch them glow when it goes dark. Your firefly jar is now complete.
