Business News BABC vice-president re-appointed By John Lamb

A key international appointment will put Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce (GBCC) at the heart of negotiations following the announcement that the UK is to open formal free-trade talks with the US. Mandy Haque, the Chamber’s

international director, has been re- appointed vice-president of the prestigious British American Business Council (BABC) and will play a key role as Greater Birmingham seeks even stronger trading relations with the US and Canada. And the appointment comes as

the GBCC plans an International Week, which will include its first digital global conference on 24 June (see pages 12 and 13). Mandy is beginning her third

term as vice-president of the BABC, of which Greater Birmingham Transatlantic Chamber of Commerce (GBTCC) is part. Mandy works closely with the BABC president and former San Francisco businessman Stuart Bagshaw and her re-appointment underlines the Chamber’s long-

experience in global trade, including a close relationship with key political and business figures in the US and Canada.” The GBCC hosted a hugely

successful BABC conference in Birmingham’s Town Hall in 2018, when the keynote speaker was Woody Johnson, the US ambassador to the United Kingdom. Since then, relationships between

standing global influence. Its expertise in international

affairs is strengthened by Birmingham lawyer Steve Allen, who served as BABC president and then chair before becoming president of the GBCC, and Professor Julian Beer, deputy vice- chancellor of Birmingham City University, who is president of the GBTCC. Mandy, formerly head of

operational service delivery at Birmingham Airport, said: “I am delighted and honoured to be

appointed to serve another term at the British American Business Council. “There cannot have been a more

important time for strong relationships between the UK and the US after Brexit and when we emerge from the Covid-19 crisis. I greatly look forward to promoting the UK’s interests - especially those of the West Midlands - as the trade talks get underway. “And behind me I have the

Chamber’s International Hub, which has a huge depth of knowledge and

the US and the GBCC have remained strong and trading between the nations will form part of a critical digital international week of events being organised by the Chamber next month. Paul Faulkner, chief executive of

the GBCC, said: “Mandy’s continued presence as a key figure in the BABC is hugely important for the Chamber and for transatlantic business relationships. “She is a massively respected

figure globally and her expertise in the field of international business development will be invaluable for both the UK and especially the West Midlands as we strive to strike a post-Brexit deal with the US.”
