What does your company do? We have over 30 years’ experience delivering secure business communications, remote working, data centre and cloud-managed services to our customers.

How did it all start? Intercity was founded in the mid- 1980s as an independent service provider at the dawn of mobile technology in the UK. We were one of the first Vodafone partners and were licenced by Cellnet (O2).

What’s your greatest achievement so far? Transforming a traditional telecoms business into a much broader technology business, covering cloud, IT security, managed services, as well as communications.

What is the biggest risk you’ve ever taken – and did it work out? To drive the transformation of Intercity Technology we acquired two very different businesses – Gage Networks and Imerja – a significant step away from our core business and an area where we didn’t previously have expertise. It worked and we retained all the key people who gave us the skills and talent required to drive the technology.

What keeps you awake at night? Not a lot these days. I have learnt to work as a team more and the support of some brilliant colleagues gives me confidence that we can tackle almost anything. I have also learnt to trust my judgement and instinct more which helps.

What has surprised you most in your job? The adaptability and true spirit of our team to not only get through the current Covid-19 situation, but to make amazing things happen for our customers.

What advice would you give to someone starting out? Surround yourself with good people who are better at the things that you are not so good at and play to your own strengths.

Which business do you most admire? Apple – the ability to make technology intuitive, accessible and widely enjoyed. They are the masters at that.

What exciting projects is your business working on? We recently launched a business communications support package to provide customers and local businesses with remote working support, expertise and practical help to help them get through these unprecedented times.

What made you join Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce and how are you making use of your membership? Being a member of such an active Chamber is a great way to connect with like-minded local businesses and to be able to provide support to other members.
