Finding new ways of learning

Like many other workplaces and institutions, Solihull College has had to close down because of the Covid-19 crisis – but that doesn’t mean to say its activities have ceased. College principal John Callaghan (pictured) explains what has been going on behind the scenes during the lockdown.

Solihull College & University Centre may have had to temporarily shut its campus doors during the Covid-19 crisis, but I am extremely proud of how our students and staff have found innovative ways to continue to learn remotely, assist the community and adapt to these unusual times. With classes currently moving online, many

teams have quickly introduced a range of new teaching methods. Tutors have been inspired to make content that caters for a mixture of learning styles and circumstances. Our management and professional team, for

instance, are making recorded lesson content available on demand to support key worker students currently working over their scheduled hours.

We offer a huge range of free distance

learning qualifications that can be studied remotely and have seen increased demand with many people in the community at home looking to use the time to upskill. With many in the community sadly laid off or

on the furlough scheme, we expect the demand for wider adult learning opportunities to increase and we will ensure our offer caters for that demand. It has been fantastic to see staff and students

coming together to help the wider community too. The health and social care, hair and beauty and science departments donated several bags of PPE including gloves, aprons, anti-bacterial wipes and hand sanitisers to the council-run Better Living Centre in Solihull.

One of our health and social care lecturers has

gone even further to assist NHS workers by collecting fabric donations and creating wash- bags for those dealing with Covid-19 patients. Our animal care team have been on site at

Blossomfield keeping the college’s animals fed and cared for on a daily basis. With staff and students showing resilience, the

college will continue to provide support to students and the local community in any way we can.
