Artistic Director Hamish Glen takes courage from Coventry’s history of resilience as the theatre looks to the future.

Thank you on behalf of the Belgrade and all its staff, for the many messages of support, the donations and the goodwill that you’ve shown us since we were forced to temporarily close our doors to the public in March. It’s been a welcome reminder of the special part the Belgrade plays in the lives of so many, and the important hub our building is in the heart of Coventry.

Theatres, just like football clubs and churches, provide a vital role in giving all of us somewhere to gather as a community; to share our stories and to experience events together - a human instinct as old as time - so it’s only natural that we feel a sense of loss just now.

Staying connected is important, so please do follow our social media channels and visit the Between Stages page on our new website – where you will find lots of things to do and watch, that we hope entertains and engages you during the summer months.

Coventry has a long history of resilience and its ability to adapt and overcome challenges remains at the heart of our identity. We lean on this resilience now and take courage from it as we pull together and continue to sow seeds for the future.

It’s important, I believe, to keep looking ahead to better days, and with that in mind we’ve put our new Autumn Season on sale, we’re continuing with our exciting 2020 Redevelopment Project and we have UK City of Culture next year to look forward to.

As a registered charity (number 219163) the Belgrade Theatre is only able to continue to use the transformative power of theatre to enrich communities and change lives, thanks to the incredible kind support of our funders, members, audiences, donors and partners.

Last year, we earned 75.5% of our income, which enabled us to work with 13,471 children and young people in workshops and welcome 175,171 people to experience live theatre at the Belgrade. The £209,044 raised in

Once again, I’d like to thank you for your patience, support and goodwill, and I look forward to welcoming you back to the Belgrade as soon as possible. Keep safe and well.

donations, grants and membership, also meant we were able to provide 907 Making Memories tickets to our shows, for local families in need, and visit 28 primary schools with our touring production Big School - which looks at the issues around the transition to secondary school.

THANK YOU to everyone who plays their part in supporting the Belgrade – as the arts play a vital role in the social, economic and mental health and well-being of communities. So if you are able to make a donation, buy a ticket or become a Member, particularly at this time, you will be helping to keep the power of theatre alive and well, particularly for those who need it most.
