Mojo Nixon The Mojo Manifesto: The Original Album Collection (Manifesto) Not only is Elvis

everywhere, so is Mojo

Nixon! At last, it’s the whole rabid gut- wrenching, rockabilly and rolling motherlode, all in one kick-ass collection of ten CDs and DVDs that defined an entire generation of swamp rats and weed smoking aristocrats. Every Mojo solo LP and every duo LP that found Nixon sparring alongside the flamboy- ant Skid Roper are all here folks, as well as rare demos In the history of popular music, few

songwriters have shown a greater talent for naming their songs than Mojo Nixon. "Jesus at McDonald's," “Debbie Gibson is Pregnant with My Two Headed Love Child,” “Stuffin' Martha's Muffin," "Elvis Is Everywhere," "Don Henley Must Die," What's Up Judge Judy's Ass" and “Destroy All Lawyers” are just a few that come to mind. But Mojo Nixon is about much more than a snappy song title. He is a singular talent who sprang out of the college rock explosion of the '80s, kicked it in the head, stomped on it, and went on to pave his own path to glory. This massive 10 CD Box Set that chron-

icles Mojo’s entire recording career and in- cludes a 40-page booklet full of rare photos . Also included is a bonus DVD collection of Mojo Nixon's videos. Get your Mojo workin. If this don’t do it, nothing will.

Cere Deep Sod (Cere Family)

Didier Cere is a man

of many talents. He re- fuses to be boxed into a

single category, and brings total professional- ism to every project he is involved in, whether it be the recent CD by the Bootleggers or his new album by Abilene. On his solo album, Deep Sod, all of his many American influ- ences raise their heads, from blues shuffles to country and western tunes, yodeling, Western Swing and so much more. I guess I must say at the outset of this review, the entire album is performed in French. That said, the music is so good, I barely even notices the fact that I don’t know what he’s singing. “Blues de John” is an up-tempo blues

rocker, and it is evident from the very start that the group of musicians assembled by Cere are among the finest yet. I absolutely love the fact that he has a blues shuffle and right in the middle, he goes into a yodel like a singing cowboy! Didier is a really good singer and guitarist, and the lead and slide guitar players are all playing at the top of their game. The album has it all – great piano, B-3, fiddle, horn section, pedal steel, banjo and more. Wow. “Barrelhouse Blues” swings, baby. It re-

minded me of the sounds of the 1940’s. Jazzy. And “Bayou Stomp” mines the sounds of Cajun and Zydeco music. “Zack Attack Rap” was a real surprise among many surprises. A French “rap” song about Zydeco music. Be- lieve me, it’s a smoker. Great guitar picking too. “

While the album is mostly original,

Cere and company dish out a fine version of Mel Tillis’ “Honky Tonk.” Also notable is the original, “Trucker Blues,” a stripped down acoustic number that moves into a really nice smooth, groove with more tasty guitar work.
