middle of the night, so when you wake up your usually at the next venue. You get up whenever you get up. We usually have access to the venue by mid-morning. Sort of get settled in, figure out the venue, get our bearings, have coffee, take a shower, do whatever. Lunch usually starts around 11 so the crew and everybody can get a bite of food before load in starts. Load in is around noon, they get the tractor trailer unloaded and everything on deck. The crew, they bust their asses and get everything unloaded and set and usually they have the stage built and set by 2:30. We are usually sound checking by 3:30, usually do 1 – 1.5-hour sound check. We run through anything that we haven’t maybe done recently that Charlie feels like we need to touch on, or any extra songs that are a one off, or someone sitting in we definitely run those in sound check. it usu- ally runs pretty smooth making sure all the levels are right and that John has a good sound coming out of the front of the house. Once Charlie feels good about what he wants us to run over we are done. Then it is suppertime and then it’s a wait- ing game. We are usually the headliners, we are going on around 9 or so. Everyone starts getting ready about an hour before showtime. We hit the stage, run the show, then get it torn down as quick as possible. Then we assemble and do whatever VIP or meet and greets and do that while the crew is getting everything back on the tractor trailer. Then its waiting on bus time. Once the bus is rolling out everyone is usually jumping in their bunks and crashing out and then its wake up the next day and do it again.
Tell us about your family. We have a very tight family I’m married, no kids. I have my two older sisters and they have families with kids and then their kids have families. We have a pretty large immediate family. We are quite close. My parents live near me in a little re- tirement community here in Marietta. They are still very healthy and thriving we are very fortu- nate to have them with us. They raised us well and my sisters and I owe them for what we are now. My wife’s family, most of them live in the Cincinnati Dayton area of Ohio. We see my family more than hers because they live near us. One of my sisters lives in Mississippi so we don’t see each other as much but we are all very close.
What do you do for fun or to relax? As I said earlier, I build scale models. My wife and I met through music. Our first love together is music so if I’m not playing, we like to go see other bands and other than that we are homebod- ies. I enjoy being here with her and our dog and taking it easy.
What are your immediate or future plans? Well who knows, God’s got that in his hands. I hope to keep playing with Blackberry Smoke as long as they will have me. Its incredible fun. I keep meeting so many fans along the way and having wonderful experiences playing where we play and the people we play with and enjoying life. I’ll leave it in God’s hands. Things happen along the way the way they are supposed to, so I hope to continue to do what I’m doing. Once we get out of this coronavirus scare, we will be back to balls to the walls making music again. •
I want to thank Preston for doing this interview
for us. We also want to wish everyone well dur- ing this crazy time we are all going through. Your situation and mine might not be the same but we are all in this storm together and we all just need to love and support one another so this can turn into a distant memory and we can get back to living life, riding the rail and rocking and rolling again. - Scott Greene
