T

he April edition of FenSCENE arrives in homes and businesses at the most testing time in a generation. The impact of the Coronavirus (or Covid 19) has stopped us all in our tracks. The most basic daily activities of work, travel and socialising, that we took for granted, have been thrown into peril. Emotive phrases like ‘self-isolate’ and ‘social distancing’ have bulldozed their way into our daily vocabulary. A sense of community could not matter more - especially for those who are rurally isolated. Like many times of crisis, this modern-day plague has brought out the best and the worst in society with support groups springing up in every community while frantic shoppers have cleared supermarket shelves. So, with even more pride than usual, and thanks to our dedicated army of delivers, we present you with a whopping April edition packed with news, views and pictures from our villages. We serve up a packed offering to distract and occupy you. We are asked

to keep a level head when it comes to rural crime as we put our top local cop on the hot spot in this month’s Special Investigation feature. We find out how one local parish councillor is inspiring new life at Wilburton’s village allotments and how a group of eco-warriors are making a difference in neighbouring Haddenham. You can still get outdoors, so enjoy our regular walk feature that takes us off our usual patch as we Head To Houghton. You might have more reading time than usual, as our regular books page finds out which titles are top of the reading pops. We urge you not to miss our usual historic trip through our Time Tunnel, we offer some sensible household budget advice, some timely gardening tips and don’t miss the Easter treats served up on our recipes page. At this difficult time, we urge you to check regularly on vulnerable family members, friends and neighbours, especially the elderly. We hope, by following government advice, you and your loved ones are able to stay safe and well.

Take care,

Thanks to Desiree Ayton for our April front cover, a fabulous spring feel in this shot taken at St George’s Church, Little Thetford.
