Saxon times when a field was set aside for use by the landless poor to grow food. However the right for people to grow food in allotments was only enacted in law in 1908, imposing responsibilities on parish, urban and borough councils to provide allotments.

Above: Growing fruit and vegetables will enable you to reap the rewards of home grown crops.

The Wilburton development plan has evolved into four phases: first on the wish list is field clearance, rabbit-proof fencing, access to water, on-tap from a spring on- site, car park hard standing and gated access as well as the laying out 12 allotment spaces. Work started January 2020 aiming for completion in time for the growing season in April. Contractors have been hired to do much of this work but Steve himself has devoted considerable physical labour to the site.

Other targets on the timeline

include: New Life on the Old West community space- spring/ summer 2020.

Woodland Trust provided trees- autumn/winter2020 to be planted by volunteers.

The sandpit area will be cleared, fenced and trees planted and has been earmarked for use by the scouts and guides.

The wider Wilburton community has become involved in the project. The Wilburton Beer Festival which raises funds for local projects and has now been going for over 20 years, has indicated it will support the community green space.

Above: The wellbeing benefits of allotments are promoted by the National Allotment Society.

The school head teacher David Aston is keen to encourage an

outdoors focus among children and has taken two allotments for the school. The big tree planting exercise in the autumn/winter will be staffed by volunteers. Several people have already applied for allotments and of the 12 new allotments identified, only five are now unallocated.

If you would like to

become involved or for more information you can make contact via the Wilburton Parish Council Email: assistantclerk@ wilburtonparishcouncil.org Tel. 07510 102444.
