MOTORING

newest hybrid Quality is

high in Ford’s

Ford is unveiling no fewer than 12 hybrid cars in 2020. Here, motoring journalist Nick Jones assesses one of the early entries – the Mondeo.

We all know what a Mondeo looks like, as they’ve seemingly been around forever, albeit with several updates along the way. Indeed, as the hybrid is available in both saloon and estate guises - just like the petrol and diesel counterparts - it’s hard to distinguish between them; except for a ‘Hybrid’ badge that flanks the sides. Mine here is the 2.0-litre petrol

hybrid, which flicks seamlessly between battery and engine power, stirring 187 horsepower. That’s good enough to see it attain a top speed of nearly 120 miles per hour, with 60 taking 9.2 seconds; not startling figures you may think, which I’ll agree with. But it’s not all about pace this

time, more the low emission figure and darn-good fuel economy to boot. Add to that the lovely CVT automatic gearbox and a revised interior that’s really comfortable and you’ll be set for a very relaxed, effortless cruise. The main difference internally is the new instrument cluster

92 business network April 2020

dominated by the speedo that also shows how much power you’re using or regenerating. The centre console is dominated

by an infotainment touchscreen that works really well and alleviates the need for lots of cluttered buttons and switches. Quality is as high as I can remember in a Ford and both you and passengers will not be disappointed with the

amount of room in there. One thing to note, though, is

when you open the tailgate the batteries take up most of the room on the boot floor so space, while not shabby, isn’t as big as you’d expect from that of a non-hybrid. Overall a quality piece of kit, but

it comes at a price so shop around for the spec you want and the options you’d like to add.
