CHAMBER NEWS

Five reasons why Generation Next will help our region thrive

By Jasmine Thompson, Marketing Officer at the Chamber

Generation Next aims to retain the skills in the region, to ensure the East Midlands is an attractive proposition to anybody starting out in their careers. With everything the East Midlands has to offer – from both a personal and professional perspective - this network, ran by the Chamber, will reassert the region’s place on the map for fresh talent and highlight it as a great place to work, live and play. Generation Next does this by

providing resources to develop the skills and knowledge of new businesspeople and enterprise start-ups. From its inception in February, it has begun attracting large numbers to events, with over 110 delegates attending the launch, and over 40 people at the recent event held at Leicester Tigers on 13 March. Still within the launch period,

Generation Next will offer regular networking opportunities, workshops and a mix of formal and informal topical events, hosted by and featuring a range of the Chamber’s member companies and advisers.

The overall aim of the network is

to build futures to help the region thrive, and here are five key ways Generation Next will do just that:

1. GENERATION NEXT WILL GIVE THE FUTURE GENERATION OF BUSINESS LEADERS THE TOOLS TO SUCCEED. Whether straight out of university, or starting up a new enterprise, there can be an element of the unknown that surrounds exactly what is needed to start a successful career and/or business. Using the stories, experiences and advice from East Midlands-based businesses, Generation Next hopes to bridge this gap and let members in on all the varied elements crucial to succeeding. It will also offer events and resources dedicated to essential skills which will give members that extra edge when starting new employment.

2. IT WILL HELP PREVENT THE ‘B-LINE’ TO LONDON. It was found in 2015 by the Guardian that only 39% of graduates which studied in the East Midlands held

employment here six months after graduation. If graduates and new entrepreneurs realise that there is opportunity within our region, along with the lower house prices, they will remain to build their futures. Generation Next will showcase the best of our region’s businesses in a bid to inspire others to set up and stay within our prosperous region – retaining talent and providing a boost to our region’s economy.

3.THE NETWORK WILL CREATE A NEW COMMUNITY OF FRESH FACES FOR THE EAST MIDLANDS. Generation Next will act as a community for businesspeople from aspiring professionals, undergraduates to enterprise start- ups, in order to support their career growth; with the networking acting as a vital and accessible go-to for any questions or queries. It is also a fantastic opportunity to get networking. Not something you are necessarily taught in school; networking is a key ingredient to making a business thrive. It allows you to make connections, collaborate with like-minded individuals and reach new audiences - perhaps your future business partner, supplier or client.

4.GENERATION NEXT WILL USE THRIVING BUSINESSES TO INSPIRE OTHERS. The Chamber has a pool of successful organisations at its fingertips of all sizes and from all sectors. With their help, Generation Next can offer meaningful events, resources and guidance drawing on the experts who have been there and done it. The network offers the

opportunity for organisations to become mentors to the next generation of business professionals, to offer tangible understandings of the business landscape and create sustainable growth.

5.THE EAST MIDLANDS IS AN ATTRACTIVE PLACE TO BUILD A CAREER. The East Midlands is already a fantastic place to build a career or start a business – all Generation Next has to do is shout about it and make it known. With brilliant connectivity, fantastic businesses, great communities and affordable house prices, the region itself is already a selling point. With Generation Next’s support offering, it is perfectly paired with a thriving region to make sure its people thrive along with it.
